چکیده

In this work, we present the Poroelastic Relaxation Indentation (PRI) testing approach for quantifying the mechanical and transport properties of thin layers of poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels with thicknesses on the order of 200 mm. Specifically, PRI characterizes poroelastic relaxation in hydrogels by indenting the material at fixed depth and measuring the contact area-dependent load relaxation process as a function of time. With the aid of a linear poroelastic theory developed for thin or geometrically confined swollen polymer networks, we demonstrate that PRI can quantify the water diffusion coefficient, shear modulus and average pore size of the hydrogel layer. This approach provides a simple methodology to quantify the material properties of thin swollen polymer networks relevant to transport phenomena.

Poroelastic relaxation indentation of thin layers of gels

We develop a method of poroelastic relaxation indentation (PRI) to characterize thin layers of gels. The solution to the time-dependent boundary-value problem is obtained in a remarkably simple form, so that the force-relaxation curve obtained by indenting a gel readily determines all the poroelastic constants of the gel—the shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and the effective diffusivity. The met...

Mechanical measurements of heterogeneity and length scale effects in PEG-based hydrogels.

Colloidal-probe spherical indentation load-relaxation experiments with a probe radius of 3 μm are conducted on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel materials to quantify their steady-state mechanical properties and time-dependent transport properties via a single experiment. PEG-based hydrogels are shown to be heterogeneous in both morphology and mechanical stiffness at this scale; a linear-har...

Study of Torsional Vibrations of Composite Poroelastic Spherical Shell-Biot’s Extension Theory

Torsional vibrations of composite poroelastic dissipative spherical shell are investigated in the framework of Biot’s extension theory. Here composite poroelastic spherical shell consists of two spherical shells, one is placed on other, and both are made of different poroelastic materials. Consideration of the stress-free boundaries of outer surface and the perfect bonding between two shells lea...

Spherical indentation analysis of stress relaxation for thin film viscoelastic materials

The mechanical testing of thin layers of soft materials is an important but difficult task. Spherical indentation provides a convenient method to ascertain material properties whilst minimising damage to the material by allowing testing to take place in situ. However, measurement of the viscoelastic properties of these soft materials is hindered by the absence of a convenient yet accurate model...

Poroelastic swelling kinetics of thin hydrogel layers: comparison of theory and experiment

Thin poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels were allowed to swell under two conditions: as freestanding layers and as substrate-attached layers. Through a combination of particle tracking and defocusing methods, the positions of beads embedded within the gels were monitored over time via fluorescence microscopy, providing a convenient method to track the kinetics of swelling for layers ...
