Phase transition of triangulated spherical surfaces with elastic skeletons

چکیده
A first-order transition is numerically found in a spherical surface model with skeletons, which are linked to each other at junctions. The shape of triangulated surfaces is maintained by skeletons, which have a one-dimensional bending elasticity characterized by the bending rigidity b, and the surfaces has no two-dimensional bending elasticity except at the junctions. The surfaces swell and become spherical at large b and collapse into crumpled at small b. These two phases are separated from each other by the first-order transition. Although both of the surface and the skeleton are allowed to self-intersect and hence phantom, our results indicate a possible phase transition in biological or artificial membranes whose shape is maintained by cytoskeletons.

Phase transition of triangulated spherical surfaces supported by elastic chains with rigid junctions
A surface model with skeletons is investigated by using the canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The skeleton is composed of linear chains, which are joined to each other at the rigid junctions. A one-dimensional bending energy is defined on the linear chains, and no two-dimensional curvature energy is assumed on the surface. The model undergoes a first-order transition between the smooth phase a...

An elastic surface model is investigated by using the canonical Monte Carlo simulation technique on triangulated spherical meshes. The model undergoes a first-order collapsing transition and a continuous surface fluctuation transition. The shape of surfaces is maintained by a one-dimensional bending energy, which is defined on the mesh, and no two-dimensional bending energy is included in the H...
متن کاملPhase transitions of an intrinsic curvature model on dynamically triangulated spherical surfaces with point boundaries
An intrinsic curvature model is investigated using the canonical Monte Carlo simulations on dynamically triangulated spherical surfaces with two fixed vertices separated by distance 2L. We found a first-order transition at finite curvature coefficient α, and moreover that the order of transition remains unchanged even when L is enlarged such that the surfaces become sufficiently oblong. This is...
متن کاملPhase transition of an extrinsic curvature model on tori
We show a numerical evidence that a tethered surface model with extrinsic curvature undergoes a first-order crumpling transition between the smooth phase and a nonsmooth phase on triangulated tori. The results obtained in this Letter together with the previous ones on spherical surfaces lead us to conclude that the tethered surface model undergoes a first-order transition on compact surfaces.

A compartmentalized surface model of Nambu and Goto is studied on triangulated spherical surfaces by using the canonical Monte Carlo simulation technique. One-dimensional bending energy is defined on the skeletons and at the junctions, and the mechanical strength of the surface is supplied by the one-dimensional bending energy defined on the skeletons and junctions. The compartment size is char...
