Dissipation of contestable rents by small numbers of contenders

چکیده

The theory of rent seeking with its origins in the observations of Gordon Tullock (1967) or to use Jagdish Bhagwati's (1982) proposed term, the theory of directly unproductive profit-seeking activities is concerned with the potentially adverse effects on resource allocation of incentives to capture and defend artificially-contrived rents and transfers. The scope for social loss proposed by the theory derives from the relation between the value of a contestable prize and the value of the resources attracted into the contest to determine the beneficiary of the prize. Underlying this social loss is a specification of how rational behavior by optimizing agents links the value of the prize sought to the resources expended. It has been traditional to assume competitive behavior in describing the activities of lobbying and influence seeking. Then, if some further conditions are satisfied, l the total value of the resources expended precisely equals the value of the prize sought, so dissipation is complete. 2 Consequently, the social cost associated with contestability of a rent can be inferred from the value of the rent itself, and the detailed and hard-to-comeby information on individual outlays made in the course of the contest becomes unnecessary. By basing their analyses on competitive dissipation, contributors to the rent seeking literature (see the review by Robert Tollison, 1982) have been able to presume that the observed value of a contested rent is an exact measure of the associated social cost of monopoly power or regulation. Similarly, in the trade-theoretic literature where the rights contested are to quota premia or revenues from trade taxes (Krueger, 1974; Bhagwati

Rent Seeking and the Economics of Corruption

The paper studies the influence of Gordon Tullock (1967) and the rent-seeking literature more generally on the study of corruption. The theoretical corruption literature with its emphasis on principal-agent relationships within government and rent creation by corruption politicians has largely, but not entirely, overlooked that contestable rents encourage unproductive use of real resources in s...

Non-Darcian Mixed Convection Flow in Vertical Composite Channels with Hybrid Boundary Conditions

In this article, the effects of viscous dissipation and inertial force on the velocity and temperature distributions of the mixed convection laminar flow in a vertical channel partly filled with a saturated porous medium have been studied. In this regard, the Brinkman–Forchheimer extended Darcy model was adopted for the fluid flow in the porous region. In addition, three different viscous dissi...

Productive Efficiency and Contestable Markets

This paper provides a new game theoretic model consistent with the premises of contestable markets. Two firms repeatedly compete for a natural monopoly position. The limit price of the incumbent is disciplined by a hit and run strategy of the entrant. In this model, contrarily to the well known Maskin and Tirole model (1988): i) productive efficiency is encouraged, the more efficient firm gets ...

- 1 The Size of the Prize : Testing Rent - Dissipation when Transfer Quantity Is Endogenous

We present a transfer-seeking model of political economy in which the size of the transfer is determined endogenously, and in which over-dissipation of rents is predicted even under conditions of risk-neutrality and perfect rationality. We implement an empirical test of this model by collecting behavioral data in a laboratory experiment. We confirm the existence of behavior that leads to over-d...

HALL AND LON-SLIP EFFECTS ON MAGNETO-MICROPOLAR FLUID WITH COMBINED FORCED AND FREE CONVECTION IN BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW OVER A HORIZONTAL PLATE WITH VISCOUS DISSIPATION

In this paper, we study the effects of Hall and ion-slip currents on the steady magneto-micropolar of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid over a horizontal plate by taking in to account the viscous dissipation effects. By means of similarity solutions, deviation of fundamental equations on the assumption of small magnetic Reynolds number are solved numerically by using qu...
