Parenteral Hydrocarbon Injection and Associated Toxicities: Two Case Reports
نویسندگان
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Many cases of hydrocarbon toxicity occur annually due to oral or inhalational exposure. Rarely are hydrocarbons injected subcutaneously or intravenously. These parenteral routes of exposure, however, can have a wide range of consequences ranging from mild skin irritation to tissue necrosis, pulmonary injury, neurologic consequences, cardiovascular collapse, and death. WD-40TM is a commonly used household hydrocarbon containing aliphatic hydrocarbon (45 – 50%), low vapor pressure aliphatic hydrocarbon (12 – 18%), petroleum-based oil (<25%), carbon dioxide (2-3%), surfactant (<2%), and other “non-hazardous ingredients” (<10%).1 We present a pair of cases and associated visual images of complications from intravenous (IV) and subcutaneous (SC) WD-40 injection. Additionally, we will discuss complications from parenteral hydrocarbon exposures, in particular pulmonary injury and local tissue reactions as observed in our cases.

Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis in Heterozygous Sickle Haemoglobin, the Role of Parenteral Drug Abuse: A Case Report
Sickle cell trait is a benign haemoglobin disorder which rarely results in disease or complications. A few cases of osteonecrosis have been reported in the literature in parts of the world with advanced health care system. There are various predispositions to developing avascular necrosis in general, while the sickle beta globin gene inheritance is the most efficient factor. Injection drug abus...
متن کاملNon-Diethylstilbestrol-Associated Primary Clear Cell Carcinoma of the Vagina: Two Case Reports with Immunohistochemical Studies and Literature Review
Primary clear cell adenocarcinomas most commonly involve the genitourinary system, including the vagina. Previously, primary clear cell adenocarcinomas of the vagina have been discussed within the context of prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol. Due to its widely proven role in the development of this carcinoma, administration of diethylstilbestrol is prohibited. We present two cases of non-...
متن کاملDichloromethane Injection: Case Report
Background: Dichloromethane (a chlorinated hydrocarbon) is normally used as a solvent. Dichloromethane poisoning has been reported from occupational exposure and the common routes of dichloromethane poisoning are ingestion and inhalation. Case presentation: We described a case of 51-year-old man who received subcutaneous injection of dichloromethane and presented with local wound necrosis at hi...
متن کاملCoal tar creosote abuse by vapour inhalation presenting with renal impairment and neurotoxicity: a case report
A 56 year old aromatherapist presented with advanced renal failure following chronic coal tar creosote vapour inhalation, and a chronic tubulo-interstitial nephritis was identified on renal biopsy. Following dialysis dependence occult inhalation continued, resulting in seizures, ataxia, cognitive impairment and marked generalised cerebral atrophy. We describe for the first time a case of creoso...
