Active Vergence Behavior

چکیده
This paper describes a real-time vergence control mechanism developed for the stereo head MEDUSA 13], in the context of behavior based active control 3]. Real-time control architectures for active vision impose strong constraints on the computational complexity of image processing algorithms. In many applications, the image size is often drastically reduced in order to achieve fast and reactive routines, at the cost of precision in the output of the algorithms. Non-uniform sampling of the images, through the log-polar mapping, is an eecient way of reducing the amount of data to process 8, 17], while maintaining a good resolution in the center of the eld of view. By using active vision devices, such as stereo heads, we are able to inspect a wide eld of view with high resolution. Besides the image size reduction feature, the correlation index of log-polar images, as a function of the vergence angle, has major advantages over cartesian images, in the detection of correct vergence conngurations 9]. Moreover, in this paper we show that the correlation index can be used for robust vergence control, with very low resolution log-polar images, leading to a very fast visuo-motor process. There is no explicit disparity estimation and the control law is a function of direct image measurements. A performance analysis of the of this method for several log-polar sensors is done, establishing criteria to choose adequate layouts. A real time implementation is described and extensive experiments have been performed. On the Influence of Sensor Morphology on Vergence
In the field of developmental robotics, a lot of attention has been devoted to algorithms that allow agents to build up skills through sensorimotor interaction. Such interaction is largely affected by the agent’s morphology, that is, its shape, limb articulation, as well as the position and density of sensors on its body surface. Despite its importance, the impact of morphology on behavior has ...
متن کاملStereo Vision Head Vergence using GPU Cepstral Filtering
Vergence ability is an important visual behavior observed on living creatures when they use vision to interact with the environment. The notion of active observer is equally useful for robotic vision systems on tasks like object tracking, fixation and 3D environment structure recovery. Humanoid robotics are a potential playground for such behaviors. This paper describes the implementation of a ...

متن کاملCorrelation based Vergence Control using Log - polar Images ?
This paper describes a real-time vergence control mechanism based on log-polar images, developed for a robot head. We show that vergence behavior can be achieved at reduced computational cost using simple correlation measures on log-polar images. The main advantages of using a non-uniform image sampling mechanism, such as the log-polar images, are related both to perceptual and algorithm comple...
متن کاملNeurons in the posterior interposed nucleus of the cerebellum related to vergence and accommodation. I. Steady-state characteristics.
The present study used single-unit recording and electrical microstimulation techniques in alert, trained rhesus monkeys to examine the involvement of the posterior interposed nucleus (IP) of the cerebellum in vergence and accommodative eye movements. Neurons related to vergence and ocular accommodation were encountered within a circumscribed region of the IP and their activity during changes i...
