Clinical Ramifications of Malabsorption of Fructose and Other Short-chain Carbohydrates

چکیده
INTRODUCTION F ructose is a hexose that is present widely in the diet as free fructose, in the disaccharide, sucrose, and in fructans, which are chains of fructose with a terminal glucose. Fructans are also known as inulins (when the number of fructose molecules, or degree of polymerization or DP, is ≥10), or fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) or oligofructose (when the DP is <10). Fructose has created much interest because of its possible role in contributing to the obesity epidemic in the USA (1) and for its postulated role in inducing functional gut symptoms. Symptoms such as bloating, abdominal distension, discomfort, pain, and altered bowel habits are often NUTRITION ISSUES IN GASTROENTEROLOGY, SERIES #53

Fructans of chicory: intestinal transport and fermentation of different chain lengths and relation to fructose and sorbitol malabsorption.
Fructans (fructooligosaccharides and inulin) are of increasing interest to clinical nutritionists as functional food additives. The chemically closely related food carbohydrates fructose and sorbitol are implicated in functional bowel disease. Intestinal handling of these carbohydrates is incompletely understood. Intestinal absorption, transit, and fermentation (breath hydrogen and methane, ven...
متن کاملDietary triggers of abdominal symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome: randomized placebo-controlled evidence.
BACKGROUND & AIMS Observational studies suggest dietary fructose restriction might lead to sustained symptomatic response in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and fructose malabsorption. The aims of this study were first to determine whether the efficacy of this dietary change is due to dietary fructose restriction and second to define whether symptom relief was specific to free fruc...
متن کاملFructose, trehalose and sorbitol malabsorption.
Carbohydrate malabsorption is a frequent clinical condition, often associated with abdominal symptoms. Although lactose represents the most commonly malabsorbed sugar, also other carbohydrates, such as fructose, trehalose and sorbitol may be incorrectly absorbed in the small intestine. Fructose malabsorption seems more common in patients with functional bowel disease, even if randomized and con...
متن کاملA Case Report of Glucose-Galactose Malabsorption in Iranian Child
Introduction Glucose-Galactose Malabsorption (GGM) is an autosomal recessive and rare disorder of intestinal transport of glucose and sodium-glucose cotransporter type (SGLT1). Case Report Our patient is a 32-day-old boy who was examined for severe diarrhea and acidosis and was treated with GGMdiagnosis. A number of laboratory tests were performed on this patient as well as positive test for r...
متن کاملThe clinical impact of carbohydrate malabsorption.
Malabsorption of carbohydrates such as fructose, lactose or sorbitol can often be detected among patients suffering from so-called non specific abdominal complaints. Sometimes the differential diagnosis may be difficult. So far successful treatment consists of dietary interventions only. Nevertheless, many questions are remaining still unanswered.
