چکیده

H-optimisation (Givens, 1997; 1999a; Givens et al. 1999) and U-optimisation (Witting , 1999)|two methods for optimising Strike Limit Algorithms|are compared on theoretical principles and simple examples. Despite some appealing and innovative features, U-optimisation is not a reliable method in its current formulation. Two new H-optimisation strategies are described which incorporate the most appealing aspects of Witting's approach. These new strategies produce results on an example that are virtually identical to those given by U-optimisation, but the new variants would be more reliable in cases where U-optimisation fails. Several calculations suggest, however, that any eeort to achieve the goal targeted by U-optimisation and these new strategies may be misguided if strikes are to be continually taken over long time periods.

Optimising Cancer Chemotherapy Using Particle Swarm Optimisation and Genetic Algorithms

Cancer chemotherapy is a complex treatment mode that requires balancing the benefits of treating tumours using anti-cancer drugs with the adverse toxic side-effects caused by these drugs. Some methods of computational optimisation, Genetic Algorithms in particular, have proven to be useful in helping to strike the right balance. The purpose of this paper is to study how an alternative optimisat...

Unbiased cut selection for optimal upper limits in neutrino detectors: the model rejection potential technique

We present a method for optimising experimental cuts in order to place the strongest constraints (upper limits) on theoretical signal models. The method relies only on signal and background expectations derived from Monte-Carlo simulations, so no bias is introduced by looking at actual data, for instance by setting a limit based on expected signal above the “last remaining data event.” After di...

On Statistical Methods that Permit and Improve the Use of Simpler Model-Based Strike Limit Algorithms

The diierence between the dynamics of a population model in an Aboriginal Whaling Management Procedure (AWMP) and the dynamics of either the true stock or the common control program for testing AWMPs is a form of model misspeciication. The potential estimation bias introduced by this misspeciication provides the opportunity to empirically improve model-based strike limits. We show how to adjust...

An object-based comparative methodology for motion detection based on the F-Measure

The majority of visual surveillance algorithms rely on effective and accurate motion detection. However, most evaluation techniques described in literature do not address the complexity and range of the issues which underpin the design of a good evaluation methodology. In this paper we explore the problems associated with both the optimising the operating point of any motion detection algorithm...

Algorithms for Computing Limit distributions of Oscillating Systems with Finite Capacity

We address the batch arrival  systems with finite capacity under partial batch acceptance strategy where service times or rates oscillate between two forms according to the evolution of the number of customers in the system. Applying the theory of Markov regenerative processes and resorting to Markov chain embedding, we present a new algorithm for computing limit distributions of the number cus...
