A Robust Border Detection Algorithm with Application to Medieval Music Manuscripts

چکیده
Medieval music manuscripts pose special challenges for digital processing. Their unique page layouts and sometimes extreme degradation can make it difcult even to identify the portions of an image that correspond to the musical page. This paper addresses the page identication problem for medieval documents, with natural extensions to any type of image processing that entails separating a border from the central image content. Aimed at keeping the removal process simple and fast, we present a contour-searching approach that is novel for using only the paper itself, without cues from staff lines or other musical elements.

A New Algorithm for Skin Lesion Border Detection in Dermoscopy Images
Background: With advances in medical imaging systems, digital dermoscopy has become one of the major imaging modalities in the analysis of skin lesions. Thus, automated segmentation or border detection has a great impact on the subsequent steps of skin cancer computer-aided diagnosis using demoscopy images. Since dermoscopy images suffer from artifacts such as shading and hair, there is a need ...
متن کاملOne-Step Detection of Background, Staff Lines, and Symbols in Medieval Music Manuscripts with Convolutional Neural Networks
One of the most complex stages of optical music recognition workflows is the detection and isolation of musical symbols. Traditionally, this goal is achieved by performing preprocesses of binarization and staff-line removal. However, these are commonly performed using heuristics that do not generalize widely when applied to different types of documents such as medieval scores. In this paper we ...
متن کاملComputational Analysis of Medieval Manuscripts: A New Tool for Analysis and Mapping of Medieval Documents to Modern Orthography
Medieval manuscripts or other written documents from that period contain valuable information about people, religion, and politics of the medieval period, making the study of medieval documents a necessary pre-requisite to gaining in-depth knowledge of medieval history. Although tool-less study of such documents is possible and has been ongoing for centuries, much subtle information remains loc...
متن کاملSymbol Classification Approach for OMR of Square Notation Manuscripts
Researchers in the field of OMR (Optical Music Recognition) have acknowledged that the automatic transcription of medieval musical manuscripts is still an open problem [2, 3], mainly due to lack of standards in notation and the physical quality of the documents. Nonetheless, the amount of medieval musical manuscripts is so vast that the consensus seems to be that OMR can be a vital tool to help...
متن کاملLooking for patterns in plainchant
Musicologists undertaking detailed analyses of medieval manuscripts containing Western liturgical chant would welcome computer assistance to enable them to make swift comparisons of large amounts of unfamiliar material. The early manuscripts employ several different notations, using neumes rather than our modern notes. The earliest notations do not specify the exact pitch or rhythm of the music...
