Medical Image Enhancement Based on a Fuzzy Multi-Scale Retinex Algorithm

The medical X-ray radiography images always have the shortcoming of low signal-noise ratio(SNR), bad definition and contrast, and it is difficult to reduce the noise while enhancing the detail characteristics by the custom image enhancement algorithm. Aiming at the problems mentioned above, in this paper, A Fuzzy Multi-scale Retinex algorithm (FMSR) is applied to medical image enhancement. Firstly the fuzzy degree of each pixel is calculated, then the MSR algorithm is applied combing with fuzzy degree to enhance the image. Experiment shows that comparing with the custom image enhancement algorithm such as the histogram equalization, the homomorphic filtering and the custom MSR alogrithm, the algorithm proposed in this paper can get a better performance, and the noise can be reduced efficiently while enhancing the image.
