Though not well known, one of the first examples of territorial autonomy in Europe can be traced to the 1224 document from Hungarian King Andreas II known as the Andreanum. In it, so-called "Saxon" settlers from the Mosel and Rhein regions established themselves in Transylvania from the 12 Century. The Andreanum describes the Saxons' status, liberties and rights in five chapters. It was amended on a number of occasions through the centuries but remained in place until 1853.
