Similarities between Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (TSP) and neurolathyrism
نویسنده
چکیده
In 1985 French investigators discovered the association of TSP with HTLV-I, a retrovirus discovered in USA in 1980. A few months after the French publication in 1985 TSP was also associated with HTLV-I in Colombia and Jamaica. In 1986 Japanese researchers published the association of HTLV-I with a similar syndrome and named the disease as HAM (HTLV-I Associated Myelopathy). Since 1988 the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the conciliatory name TSP/HAM to both syndromes. Until the end of 1996 only 45% (1,261 of 2,811 cases) of TSPs were associated to HTLV-I. That means that more (55%) of TSPs remained idiopathic or at least HTLV-I seronegative. Neurolathyrism Neurolathyrism is a neurologic disorder caused by excessive ingestion of Lathyrus species. Lathyrism has been known since ancient times; epidemics have occurred in some regions, including Russia, southern Europe, the Middle East and India, particularly during times of famine. At these times increased consumption of Lathyrus sativus, L. cicera and Vicia sativa has been implicated. Horses, cattle, swine and birds have been affected.

The Impact of Immune Response on HTLV-I in HTLV-I-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP)
Human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is a retrovirus which is associated with adult T cells leukaemia (ATL) and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) in a minority of HTLV-I-infected individuals. It is not clear why a minority of HTLV-I-infected individuals develop HAM/TSP and majority remains lifelong carriers. It seems that the interaction between the v...

We reviewed the historical, clinical and etiological aspects of the progressive chronic spastic myelopathies of unknown etiology, disserting on the clinical similarities between HTLV-I seropositive and seronegative tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP), as well as focusing on the PCR studies of the seronegative TSP.

To investigate candidate genes that influence the risk of HTLV-I associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), we analyzed 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the interleukin-10 (IL-10) promoter region. METHODS: 280 cases of HAM/TSP patients and 255 HTLV-I seropositive asymptomatic carriers (HCs) from Kagoshima, Japan were studied. All subjects gave written informed conse...

In summary, our present system virology is confirmed current hypothesis about HAM/TSP pathogenesis with more details. It seems that Immune-dysregulation especially different cytokines expression in ACs individuals has key role in develop to HAM/TSP. In the other hand, HTLV-1 is successive intracellular pathogens which advantage from human host for hosting, replication and expansion in the human...
