Synchronous Rendezvous for Location-Aware Agents

چکیده
We study rendezvous of two anonymous agents, where each agent knows its own initial position in the environment. Their task is to meet each other as quickly as possible. The time of the rendezvous is measured by the number of synchronous rounds that agents need to use in the worst case in order to meet. In each round, an agent may make a simple move or it may stay motionless. We consider two types of environments, finite or infinite graphs and Euclidean spaces. A simple move traverses a single edge (in a graph) or at most a unit distance (in Euclidean space). The rendezvous consists in visiting by both agents the same point of the environment simultaneously (in the same round). In this paper, we propose several asymptotically optimal rendezvous algorithms. In particular, we show that in the line and trees as well as in multi-dimensional Euclidean spaces and grids the agents can rendezvous in time O(d), where d is the distance between the initial positions of the agents. The problem of location-aware rendezvous was studied before in the asynchronous model for Euclidean spaces and multi-dimensional grids, where the emphasis was on the length of the adopted rendezvous trajectory. We show that, contrary to the asynchronous case, where the cost of rendezvous is dominated by the size of potentially large neighborhoods, the agents are able to meet in all graphs of at most n nodes in time almost linear in d, namely, O(d log n). We also prove that there exists an infinite family of graphs in which synchronized rendezvous requires time ω(d). Regular submission to DISC 2011 University of Liverpool, Liverpool L69 3BX, UK. متن کاملRendezvous of Distance-Aware Mobile Agents in Unknown Graphs
We study the problem of rendezvous of two mobile agents starting at distinct locations in an unknown graph. The agents have distinct labels and walk in synchronous steps. However the graph is unlabelled and the agents have no means of marking the nodes of the graph and cannot communicate with or see each other until they meet at a node. When the graph is very large we want the time to rendezvou...
متن کاملMultiple Agents RendezVous in a Ring in Spite of a Black Hole
The Rendezvous of anonymous mobile agents in a anonymous network is an intensively studied problem; it calls for k anonymous, mobile agents to gather in the same site. We study this problem when in the network there is a black hole: a stationary process located at a node that destroys any incoming agent without leaving any trace. The presence of the black hole makes it clearly impossible for al...
متن کاملSelf-stabilizing Rendezvous of Synchronous Mobile Agents in Graphs
We investigate self-stabilizing rendezvous algorithms for two synchronous mobile agents. The rendezvous algorithms make two mobile agents meet at a single node, starting from arbitrary initial locations and arbitrary initial states. We study deterministic algorithms for two synchronous mobile agents with different labels but without using any whiteboard in the graph. First, we show the existenc...
متن کاملMobile Agent Rendezvous in a Synchronous Torus
We consider the rendezvous problem for identical mobile agents (i.e., running the same deterministic algorithm) with tokens in a synchronous torus with a sense of direction and show that there is a striking computational difference between one and more tokens. More specifically, we show that 1) two agents with a constant number of unmovable tokens or with one movable token each cannot rendezvou...
