چکیده

The effect of austenite grain size on the evolution of the bainite transformation in steels is not yet certain in spite of many investigations.1–7 Barford and Owen1 reported that the reaction rate was accelerated by decreasing the grain size, because of an increase in the number density of grain boundary nucleation sites. Umemoto et al.2 reported similar results and proposed an equation that described the grain size dependence of overall kinetics. Davenport3 argued that the grain size had no appreciable effect upon the transformation kinetics. By contrast, Graham and Axon4 suggested that because the growth of a bainite plate is resisted by the matrix, a smaller austenite grain size must retard growth. These apparently contradictory studies have yet to be rationalised. It has been demonstrated recently8,9 that different steels can show opposite effects of the austenite grain size on the bainite reaction rate and that the difference in kinetic behaviour is accompanied by obvious distinctions between the bainite microstructures. The purpose of the present work was to derive a general equation describing the reaction rate, taking into account the bainite morphology experimentally observed, with the aim of rationalising the austenite grain size effect.

AN INVESTIGATION TO BAINITE FORMATION MORPHOLOGIES IN NI-CR BEARING LOW CARBON STEELS THROUGH THERMOMECHANICAL PROCESSING

The presence of bainite in the microstructure of steels to obtain a proper combination of strength and toughness has always been desired. The previous works however have shown that the presence of preferred bainite morphologies in the microstructure of any steel would not be readily accessible. In addition, the appearance of different bainite morphologies in the microstructure of any steel is d...

Bainite transformation kinetics Part 2 Non-uniform distribution of carbon

The carbon concentration trapped in films of austenite between parallel platelets of bainite is often found to be much larger than that in the larger blocks of austenite between sheaves of bainite. The effect of this non-uniform distribution of carbon on the overall transformation kinetics of bainite is examined theoretically. It is found that the trapping of carbon in the films of austenite ac...

Kinetics of the bainite transformation

A theory is developed for the evolution of bainite as a function of time, temperature, chemical composition and austenite grain size. The model takes into account the details of the mechanism of transformation, including the fact that nucleation begins at the austenite grain surfaces, and that the growth of a sheaf occurs by the repeated nucleation of small platelets. Predictions made using the...

Temperature cycling and the rate of the bainite transformation

There is a novel range of steels under development, based on bainite forming at exceptionally low temperatures. The advantage of suppressing the transformation temperature is that incredibly fine platelets of bainitic ferrite are generated which are only 20–40 nm in thickness. This makes the steel strong and in combination with the austenite that is retained, gives a useful range of properties ...

Mathematical Modelling of Bainite Transformation Kinetics

Steels with a mixed microstructure of allotriomorphic ferrite, bainitic ferrite, retained austenite and martensite have potentially good combinations of high strength and formability. This work describes a kinetic theory for the formation of bainite in steels where the precipitation of carbides is suppressed. The theory is based on the mechanism of transformation. It includes, for example, a nu...
