“Tall oaks fallen”

چکیده

Together with Joseph Gall and Hewson Swift, David Prescott was among the first to recognize the vast potential of protozoan ciliates for studies of chromosome biology. He went on to discover the phenomenon of macronuclear genome reduction and this nucleus’ selective gene amplification and led the way in early studies of telomeres, this latter work setting the stage for the later exciting era of telomere research. David Prescott’s scientific promise was recognized early in his career. He was elected as President of the American Society for Cell Biology in 1966,when he was only 40 years old. In 1974 he was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences. From the earliest stage of his career he was greatly admired by all his protozoaon cell biology colleagues. But his career trajectory, so ascending early on, encountered political factions that kept him at arm’s length. I recall a meeting in Palo Alto, California in 1984 at which the Annual Review of Cell Biology was being designed and launched. Each of us on the committee presented our thoughts about where each discipline within cell biology stood and was heading. Prescott offered a most thoughtful and prescient perspective on the cell cycle field but another committee member had a very different take. He was a newcomer to the cell cycle field and some at the table bristled at this disrespect, while others were enthused by this new blood. At the coffee break David said to me, “Thoru, I’m heading for the airport.” I encouraged him to stay and he did. I have always remembered this as a testament to his character. Needless to say, each and every comment he had made about the cell cycle field turned about to be correct. “Tall oaks fallen” Three pioneers of chromosome science

Trophic cascades involving cougar, mule deer, and black oaks in Yosemite National Park

Using a historical reconstruction, we discovered a potential trophic cascade involving cougar (Puma concolor), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and California black oak (Quercus kelloggii) in the Yosemite Valley of Yosemite National Park in California. Our objective was to determine whether large deer populations in the absence of a top-level carnivore were suppressing tree regeneration. As hum...

Effects of Wildfire on Blue Oak in the Northern Sacramento Valley

The objective of this project was to develop a technique for rapidly determining the extent of wildfire damage to blue oaks (Quercus douglasii) that would be usable by landowners without requiring extensive training. In late winter 2000, 100 oaks of various sizes and degrees of damage were selected from 10 plots located where wildfires had burned in the previous year. Measures of individual tre...

Discovering the Rise and Fall of Software Engineering Ideas from Scholarly Publication Data

For researchers and practitioners of a relatively young discipline like software engineering, an enduring concern is to identify the acorns that will grow into oaks – ideas remaining most current in the long run. Additionally, it is interesting to know how the ideas have risen in importance, and fallen, perhaps to rise again. We analyzed a corpus of 19,000+ papers written by 21,000+ authors acr...

California Oaks and Fire: A Review and Case Study

California has a fire-prone Mediterranean climate, and many of its nine species of native oak trees are thought to have evolved with fire. Little has been widely published about the role of fire in the oak recruitment and mortality in the western United States, and there has been some debate about how to reintroduce fire into oak woodlands. We present here a review, synthesis, and analysis of t...
