Discriminating and mapping the C3 and C4 composition of grasslands in the northern Great Plains, USA

چکیده
Article history: Received 30 October 2006 Received in revised form 25 March 2007 Accepted 26 March 2007 There is uncertainty about the extent and distribution of grasslands following the C3 and C4 photosynthetic pathways. Since these grasses have an asynchronous seasonal profile it should be possible to estimate and map the C3–C4 composition of grasslands from multitemporal remote sensing imagery. This potential was evaluated using 30 weekly composite MERIS MTCI images for South Dakota, USA. Derived relationships between the remotely sensed response and composition of grasslands were significant, with R ∼0.6. It also appears possible to map broad classes of grassland composition, with a three class (high, medium and low C3 cover) classification having an accuracy of 77.8%. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Climate controls on C3 vs. C4 productivity in North American grasslands from carbon isotope composition of soil organic matter
We analyzed the dC of soil organic matter (SOM) and fine roots from 55 native grassland sites widely distributed across the US and Canadian Great Plains to examine the relative production of C3 vs. C4 plants (hereafter %C4) at the continental scale. Our climate vs. %C4 results agreed well with North American field studies on %C4, but showed bias with respect to %C4 from a US vegetation database...
متن کاملCarbon and oxygen isotopic variability in Neogene paleosol carbonates: constraints on the evolution of the C4-grasslands of the Great Plains, USA
Understanding the development of grassland ecosystems is critical for understanding the evolution of their associated vertebrate faunas. We focus on the central and southern portions of the Great Plains, which is the largest continuous grassland in North America and has a well-documented mammalian fossil record. Modern biomass in this region is dominated by C4 grasses, but paleontological evide...
متن کاملVegetation response to seven grazing treatments in the Northern Great Plains
Grazing systems may alter botanical composition and productivity of grasslands through differential use in time, space, or intensity. Seven simulated grazing treatments were applied six years in eastern Montana, USA to determine effects on plant community composition and standing crop. Treatments were moderate stocking (28.8 AUD ha 1 year ) of cattle using 3-pasture summer rotation, season-long...
متن کاملEvaluation and comparison of gross primary production estimatesfor the Northern Great Plains grasslands
Two spatially-explicit estimates of gross primary production (GPP) are available for the Northern Great Plains. An empirical piecewise regression (PWR) GPP model was developed from flux tower measurements to map carbon flux across the region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) GPP model is a process-based model that uses flux tower data to calibrate its parameters. Verificatio...
متن کاملContrasting above- and belowground sensitivity of three Great Plains grasslands to altered rainfall regimes.
Intensification of the global hydrological cycle with atmospheric warming is expected to increase interannual variation in precipitation amount and the frequency of extreme precipitation events. Although studies in grasslands have shown sensitivity of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) to both precipitation amount and event size, we lack equivalent knowledge for responses of belowgroun...
