Tuning of PID Controller for Speed Control of DC Motor Using Soft Computing Techniques – A Review

This paper presented a review study on speed control of proportional integral derivative (PID) controller for speed control of DC motor using soft computing techniques. Now a days, DC motor is widely used in industries due to its wide range of speed control even if its maintenance cost is higher than the other motors like induction motor etc. The speed control of DC motor is very interesting from research point of view. So several methods are proposed in this field. The PID controller is very commonly used industrial controller used in Nonlinear system. This controller is efficiently used in many different areas like aerospace, traction system (where higher starting torque is required), process control, in manufacturing, automation etc. The tuning of PID parameter is very difficult however there are various soft computing techniques which are used for tuning of PID controller to control the speed of DC motor. Tuning of PID parameter is very important because these parameters plays an important role in stability and performance in form of rise time, peak time, settling time, peak overshoot etc of the control system. Finally details discussion about each controller individually discussed in brief way.
