چکیده

Ferrets (Mustela furo) were domesticated from polecats (M. putorius, M. eversmannii) over 2000 years ago. Following their introduction to Britain, they escaped and hybridized with native European polecats (M. putorius). Native polecats declined to the point of near extinction prior to World War I, but have recently begun to expand from a Welsh refugium. Concern has arisen as to the extent of polecat/ferret introgression, and in particular, whether the expanding population is of mainly hybrid origin. Therefore, mitochondrial DNA sequencing was used to investigate polecat genetic diversity in Britain. Two geographically distinct lineages were found, where one may be ancestral to the British polecat, and the other to the domestic ferret. The ancestral distribution of each lineage, or assortative mating is sucient to explain the observed pattern. A further comparison between the distribution of the polecat phenotype and mitochondrial haplotype implies that the current population expansion may be mediated by dispersing male polecats hybridizing with female feral ferrets. However, the wild source of the ferret remains obscure. Relatively recent speciation from European mink (M. lutreola) and black-footed ferrets (M. nigripes), and/or the e€ects of hybridization result in an unresolved molecular phylogeny. # 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Understanding the evolutionary role of gene ̄ow is pivotal to the conservation of endangered populations. Gene ̄ow can be enhanced through population translocations that are conducted to maintain genetic variation and combat the negative consequences of inbreeding depression (two of the major concerns in the conservation of subdivided or isolated populations). While researchers have given exten...

We studied the ranging behavior of translocated and non-translocated groups of Alouatta pigra in Belize, Central America from March 1994 to May 1995. Home range size, day-range length and monthly range size were determined for all groups. In high density populations, home range size and day-range length increased with group size. Home range size increased with translocation to a low density pop...

New measurements of DNA twist elasticity.

The symmetries of the DNA double helix require a new term in its linear response to stress: the coupling between twist and stretch. Recent experiments with torsionally constrained single molecules give the first direct measurement of this new material parameter. We extract its value from a recent experiment. Finally, we sketch the effect of constrained twist on entropic elasticity of DNA arisin...

This paper introduces and discusses the consistency and effectiveness of an inexpensive modification of Pollard transects for assessing the diversity and abundance of tropical butterfly communities in two national parks in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To measure butterfly abundance, students walked simultaneous timed transects at the interface of forest and cleared areas. They either counted the num...

Comparison of sequence and function of the Oct-6 genes in zebrafish, chicken and mouse

To examine the role of the Oct-6 gene in Schwann cell differentiation we have cloned and characterized the chicken and zebrafish homologues of the mouse Oct-6 gene. While highly homologous in the Pit1-Oct1/2-Unc86 (POU) domain, sequence similarities are limited outside this domain. Both genes are intronless and both proteins lack the amino acid repeats that are a characteristic feature of the m...
