Marine Mammal Census Using Space Satellite Imagery

چکیده

A new era of commercial high-resolution imagery from space began late in 1999 resulting in resolution that is now sufficient to resolve marine mammals. This encouraged investigating the use of satellite imagery for marine-mammal population census and related studies. The question was raised: Can marine mammals be reliably detected above sensor noise and ocean clutter? To answer this question, a signal model was developed and simulated 14-meter targets were injected into IKONOS satellite imagery. A variation of a well-known, two-color method was used to subtract the ocean clutter. After clutter mitigation, it was possible to detect the simulated animals to depths of approximately 20 meters depending on the animal’s size, spectral reflectivity, and the optical properties of the ocean. The first images of marine mammals from space are presented. These examples, however, were targets of opportunity without ground truth. The preliminary assessment on the detectability of marine mammals rests largely on models and simulations.

Pilot Research on Census Mapping Based on Satellite Imagery and Web-gis

In order to revolutionize traditional census, the United Nations Statistics Division is promoting the use of GPS, digital imagery and GIS with census mapping in the new millennium [1]. The pilot research is to find a practicable solution to solve the census mapping problem in line with China’s national conditions. The general idea for the pilot research is as follows: based on high-resolution s...

Second Year Progress Report: Obtaining Census Data by Applying Image Classification Techniques to Satellite Imagery

The collection of census data is an important source of statistical information to support decision-making processes. However, traditional census collection approaches are both expensive and time consuming. This is especially the case in rural area where the communication and transportation infrastructure is not as robust as in urban areas. The analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery prov...

Towards The Collection of Census Data From Satellite Imagery Using Data Mining: A Study With Respect to the Ethiopian Hinterland

The collection of census data is an important task with respect to providing support for decision makers. However, the collection of census data is also resource intensive. This is especially the case in areas which feature poor communication and transport networks. In this paper a method is proposed for collecting census data by applying classification techniques to relevant satellite imagery....

Population Estimation Mining Using Satellite Imagery

Many countries around the world regularly collect census data. This census data provides statistical information regarding populations to in turn support decision making processes. However, traditional approaches to the collation of censes data are both expensive and time consuming. The analysis of high resolution satellite imagery provides a useful alternative to collecting census data which i...

Assessing the population coverage of a health demographic surveillance system using satellite imagery and crowd-sourcing

Remotely sensed data can serve as an independent source of information about the location of residential structures in areas under demographic and health surveillance. We report on results obtained combining satellite imagery, imported from Bing, with location data routinely collected using the built-in GPS sensors of tablet computers, to assess completeness of population coverage in a Health a...
