Approximating travelling waves by equilibria of non-local equations

چکیده
We consider an evolution equation of parabolic type in R having a travelling wave solution. We study the effects on the dynamics of an appropriate change of variables which transforms the equation into a non local evolution one having a travelling wave solution with zero speed of propagation with exactly the same profile as the original one. This procedure allows us to compute simultaneously the travelling wave profile and its propagation speed avoiding moving meshes, as we illustrate with several numerical examples. We analyze the relation of the new equation with the original one in the entire real line. We also analyze the behavior of the non local problem in a bounded interval with appropriate boundary conditions. We show that it has a unique stationary solution which approaches the traveling wave as the interval gets larger and larger and that is is asymptotically stable for large enough intervals.

Travelling Waves for a Certain First-order Coupled Pde System
This paper concentrates on a particular first-order coupled PDE system. It provides both a detailed treatment of the existence and uniqueness of monotone travelling waves to various equilibria, by differential-equation theory and by probability theory and a treatment of the corresponding hyperbolic initial-value problem, by analytic methods. The initial-value problem is studied using characteri...
متن کاملExit manifolds for lattice differential equations
We study the weak interaction between a pair of well-separated coherent structures in possibly non-local lattice differential equations. In particular, we prove that if a lattice differential equation in one space dimension has asymptotically stable (in the sense of a paper by Chow et al .) travelling-wave solutions whose profiles approach limiting equilibria exponentially fast, then the system...
متن کاملThe instability of periodic surface gravity waves
Euler’s equations describe the dynamics of gravity waves on the surface of an ideal fluid with arbitrary depth. In this paper, we discuss the stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to the full set of nonlinear equations via a non-local formulation of the water wave problem, modified from that of Ablowitz, Fokas & Musslimani (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 562, 2006, p. 313), restricted to a one-...
متن کاملSimulation of Taylor-Couette flow. Part 2. Numerical results for wavy-vortex flow with one travelling wave
We use a numerical method that was described in Part 1 (Marcus 1984a) to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equation and boundary conditions that govern Taylor-Couette flow. We compute several stable axisymmetric Taylor-vortex equilibria and several stable non-axisymmetric wavy-vortex flows that correspond to one travelling wave. For each flow we compute the energy, angular momentum, torque...
متن کاملNeural field modelling
The tools of dynamical systems theory are having an increasing impact on our understanding of patterns of neural activity. In these five lectures I will describe how to build tractable tissue level models that maintain a strong link with biophysical reality. These models typically take the form of nonlinear integro-differential equations. Their non-local nature has led to the development of a s...
