Modeling Fast Modulation Effects in Cesium Atomic Clocks

چکیده
A theory for fast modulation effects in cesium frequency s tandards has been developed and expressions derived for frequency offsets pxodtlced by Rabi and cavit,y pulling wi th square-wave phase modulation. These are compared wi th equivalent expressions for sine-wave phase modulation. Ratios of the amplitudes of the fseqnerlcy offsets in t h e two modulation schemes a re calculated for a ruoxlo-velocity beam and shown t o be in agreement wi th measurements performed on a commercial standard. This analysis allows a more complete evaluation and comparison of different rnod~llat ion schemes for cesium atomic beam standards.

VCSELs for Atomic Clock Demonstrators
Miniaturized atomic clocks (MACs) [1] are key elements for many applications such as communication systems, remote sensing, and global positioning. Such clocks use the principle of all-optical coherent population trapping (CPT) excitation which does not require a microwave cavity and VCSELs are the ideal light sources. They must feature strictly polarization-stable single-mode emission, have a ...
متن کاملInitial atomic coherences and Ramsey frequency pulling in fountain clocks
In the uncertainty budget of primary atomic cesium fountain clocks, evaluations of frequency-pulling shifts of the hyperfine clock transition caused by unintentional excitation of its nearby transitions (Rabi and Ramsey pulling) have been based so far on an approach developed for cesium beam clocks. We re-evaluate this type of frequency pulling in fountain clocks and pay particular attention to...
متن کاملThe Brazilian time and frequency atomic standards program.
Cesium atomic beam clocks have been the workhorse for many demanding applications in science and technology for the past four decades. Tests of the fundamental laws of physics and the search for minute changes in fundamental constants, the synchronization of telecommunication networks, and realization of the satellite-based global positioning system would not be possible without atomic clocks. ...
متن کاملDevelopment of VCSELs for Atomic Clock Applications
This article describes the process of transferring an 850 nm VCSEL structure to devices emitting at 895 nm, a wavelength required for cesium-based atomic clocks. We discuss all the effects to be considered and present photoluminescence measurements of the modified quantum well structure. In addition, the influence of δ-doping in distributed Bragg reflectors on VCSEL characteristics, namely thre...
متن کاملAround-the-World Atomic Clocks: Predicted Relativistic Time Gains.
During October 1971, four cesium beam atomic clocks were flown on regularly scheduled commercial jet flights around the world twice, once eastward and once westward, to test Einstein's theory of relativity with macroscopic clocks. From the actual flight paths of each trip, the theory predicts that the flying clocks, compared with reference clocks at the U.S. Naval Observatory, should have lost ...
