چکیده

Survival during the larval and juvenile stages of marine fishes is highly variable and plays a critical role in determining recruitment potential (Cushing, 1975; Houde, 1987). Early life survival is a function of both growth and mortality, and it is clear that these mechanisms act in concert to determine an individual’s probability of survival (Houde, 1996). Individuals experiencing rapid growth will spend less time in vulnerable size ranges (reduced stage duration) and achieve a larger body size at a given age, thus enhancing their ability to detect and escape predators (Bailey and Houde, 1989; Fuiman and Magurran, 1994). Consequently, recruitment success or failure is closely linked to variation in growth and mortality during the early life stage. Much of our current understanding of early life growth and mortality is based on information derived from the examination of otolith microstructures. The daily deposition of growth increments on otoliths has been demonstrated for many marine teleosts and provides a means Spatial and temporal variability in growth, mortality, and recruitment potential of postsettlement red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, in a subtropical estuary*

Utilization of subtropical seagrass meadows by newly settled red drum Sciaenops ocellatus: Patterns of distribution and growth

Spatial and temporal variability in distribution and growth of newly settled red drum Sciaenops ocellatus were examined in the Aransas Estuary, Texas, USA. Overall, 1891 red drum larvae and early juveniles (4 to 30 mm standard length. SL) were identified from weekly epibenthic sled collections taken during the annual recruitment period (September-December 1994). Densities ranged from 0.0 to 3.4...

Condition of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus ) from estuarine nursery habitats

RNA:DNA ratios of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) collected from nursery habitats in the Aransas Estuary, Texas, in 1994 were quantified using a highly sensitive ethidium-bromide fluorometric technique. RNA:DNA ratios of wild red drum were evaluated by comparing individual values to a linear regression model derived for starved laboratoryreared red drum. Wild red drum were in...

Ontogeny of critical swimming speed of wild-caught and laboratory-reared red drum Sciaenops ocellatus larvae

Critical swimming speed (Ucrit) provides a useful estimate of maximum swimming performance for fish larvae that can be used to assess transport and migratory potential. We measured Ucrit of red drum Sciaenops ocellatus larvae through its ontogeny and compared the swimming performance of laboratory-reared larvae to that of wild-caught individuals. Ucrit increased with ontogeny (size), even thoug...

Habitat-related predation on juvenile wild-caught and hatchery-reared red drum Sciaenops ocellatus (Linnaeus).

We examined the patterns of habitat-specific mortality for newly settled red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) using an experimental mesocosm approach. Experiments were designed to analyze prey vulnerability and fish rearing-type (wild-caught or hatchery-reared) in estuarine habitats of varying structural complexity including marsh (Spartina alterniflora Loisel), oyster reef (Crassostrea virginica Gme...

Effects of variable ration levels on direct and indirect measures of growth in juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus)

Relationships between somatic growth (length and weight) and two indirect measures of growth (otolith growth, RNA/DNA ratio) were assessed for red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) under different feeding rations [0%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% body weight (BW)/day] for 30 days. Representative samples from each ration level were taken in 10-day intervals between Day 0 and Day 30 for evaluation of dir...
