Refined thresholds for non-linear ground motion and temporal changes of site response associated with medium-size earthquakes

چکیده
S U M M A R Y We systematically analyse non-linear effects and temporal changes of site response associated with medium-size earthquakes, using seismic data recorded by the Japanese Strong Motion Network KIK-Net. We apply a sliding-window spectral ratio technique to surface and borehole strong motion records at six sites, and stack results associated with different earthquakes that produce similar peak ground acceleration (PGA). In some cases we observe a weak coseismic drop in the peak frequency when the PGA is as small as ∼20–30 Gal, and near instantaneous recovery after the passage of the direct S waves. The percentage of drop in the peak frequency starts to increase with increasing PGA values. We also observe a coseismic drop in the peak spectral ratio for two sites. When the PGA is larger than ∼60 Gal to more than 100 Gal, we observe considerably stronger drops of the peak frequencies followed by logarithmic recovery with time. The observed weak reductions of peak frequencies with near instantaneous recovery likely reflect non-linear response with essentially fixed level of damage, while the larger drops followed by logarithmic recovery reflect the generation (and then recovery) of additional rock damage. The results indicate clearly that non-linear site response may occur during mediumsize earthquakes, and that the PGA threshold for in situ non-linear behaviour is lower than the previously thought value of ∼100–200 Gal.

A Strong Ground Motion Catalogue of Selected Records for Shallow Crustal, Near Field Earthquakes in Iran
Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...
متن کاملNon-linearity and temporal changes of fault zone site response associated with strong ground motion
S U M M A R Y We systematically analyse temporal changes of fault zone (FZ) site response along the Karadere-Düzce branch of the North Anatolian fault that ruptured during the 1999 İzmit and Düzce earthquake sequences. The study is based primarily on spectral ratios of strong motion seismic data recorded by a FZ station and a station ∼400 m away from the fault and augmented by analysis of weak ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Nonlinear Response of Structures to Near-Fault Ground Motions and the Comparison of Results with Near-Fault Simulated Records
Near-fault ground motions have caused very much damage in the vicinity of seismic sources during recent earthquakes. It is well known that under specific circumstances, intensive ground shakings near fault ruptures may be characterized by short-duration impulsive motions. This pulse-type motion is generally particular to the forward direction, where the fault rupture propagates towards the site...
متن کاملPerformance of Mid-rise Buildings with Tubular Structure Under the Effect of Near Field Earthquakes
The aim objective of this study is to investigate the effects of near-field earthquakes on the response of mid-rise buildings with tubular structure. For this purpose, a 20-story building with a square plan of six by six bays, all with 6 m span, and story height of 3.70 m is considered. Axial force of columns, shear lag, and inter-story drift values are used as the main response parameters. N...
متن کاملA Numerical Evaluation of Seismic Response of Shallow Soil Deposits
This paper employs one-dimensional numerical ground response analysis models to investigate seismic response of shallow cohesive and non-cohesive soil deposits on vertical propagation of horizontal shear waves. Soil response is modelled by traditional equivalent-linear (EL) frequency-domain analysis using DEEPSOIL software and nonlinear (NL) time-domain analysis using OPENSEES software. The ana...
