چکیده

The majority of music in the world employs multiple concurrent parts. Among these parts, the upper-most part or voice often carries the melody. Considering the upward spread of auditory masking patterns, one might think the high-voice melodies are conflicting with masking theory. In this paper, we investigate the mutual masking effects of concurrent highand low-pitched complex tones. In addition, we consider four types of spectral envelope patterns and discuss their influence on auditory masking.

Explaining the high voice superiority effect in polyphonic music: evidence from cortical evoked potentials and peripheral auditory models.

Natural auditory environments contain multiple simultaneously-sounding objects and the auditory system must parse the incoming complex sound wave they collectively create into parts that represent each of these individual objects. Music often similarly requires processing of more than one voice or stream at the same time, and behavioral studies demonstrate that human listeners show a systematic...

The Measurement of Basic Auditory Abilities of Visually Impaired Students

Three basic auditory abilities were measured in 21 visually impaired college students and 21 sighted college students with same age and gender composition. The measurement consists of the hearing level of 11 tones, masking thresholds of same 11 tones masked by 80dB narrow band noises and frequency difference limens (FDL) of 3 tones. The results indicate that all the three auditory abilities of ...

Estimating subglottal pressure via airflow interruption with auditory masking.

Current noninvasive measurement of subglottal pressure using airflow interruption often produces inconsistent results due to the elicitation of audio-laryngeal reflexes. Auditory feedback could be considered as a means of ensuring measurement accuracy and precision. The purpose of this study was to determine if auditory masking could be used with the airflow interruption system to improve intra...

The High-Voice Superiority Effect in Polyphonic Music Is Influenced by Experience: A Comparison of Musicians Who Play Soprano-Range Compared With Bass-Range Instruments

Western polyphonic music is typically composed of multiple simultaneous melodic lines of equal importance, referred to as “voices.” Previous studies have shown that adult nonmusicians are able to encode each voice in separate parallel sensory memory traces during passive listening. Specifically, when presented with sequences composed of two simultaneous voices (melodies), listeners show mismatc...

Effects of masking noise on laryngeal resistance for breathy, normal, and pressed voice.

PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects of masking noise on laryngeal resistance for breathy, normal, and pressed voice in vocally trained women. METHOD Eighteen vocally trained women produced breathy, normal, and pressed voice across 7 fundamental frequencies during a repeated CV utterance of /pi/ under normal and masked auditory feedback. Dependent variables were...
