On the Suitability of Resampling Techniques for the Class Imbalance Problem in Credit Scoring

چکیده
In real-life credit scoring applications, the case in which the class of defaulters is under-represented in comparison to the class of non-defaulters is a very common situation, but it has still received little attention. The present paper investigates the suitability and performance of several resampling techniques when applied in conjunction with statistical and artificial intelligence prediction models over five real-world credit data sets, which have artificially been modified to derive different imbalance ratios (proportion of defaulters and non-defaulters examples). Experimental results demonstrate that the use of resampling methods consistently improves the performance given by the original imbalanced data. Besides, it is also important to note that in general, over-sampling techniques perform better than any under-sampling approach.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the works done, during the 2000–2012, in the application of data mining techniques in Credit scoring. Yet there isn’t any literature in the field of data mining applications in credit scoring. Using a novel research approach, this paper investigates academic and systematic literature review and includes all of the journals in the Science direct onli...
متن کاملLearning without Default: A Study of One-Class Classification and the Low-Default Portfolio Problem
This paper asks at what level of class imbalance one-class classifiers outperform two-class classifiers in credit scoring problems in which class imbalance, referred to as the low-default portfolio problem, is a serious issue. The question is answered by comparing the performance of a variety of one-class and two-class classifiers on a selection of credit scoring datasets as the class imbalance...
