Auriculotemporal Nerve Syndrome

چکیده
A 31-year-old man complained of recurrent episodes of left-dominant facial flushing and sweating precipitated by eating. He previously broke his bilateral mandibular condyles and was treated with conservative management. He recovered uneventfully but developed these symptoms a month after the injury. He had no history nor symptoms of a food allergy, so auriculotemporal nerve syndrome was suspected. We performed a provocation test. As soon as the patient bit into a slice of lemon, erythema and sweating appeared on the auriculotemporal region (Picture). We therefore confirm the diagnosis of auriculotemporal nerve syndrome, also known as Frey’s syndrome or gustatory sweating. With this diagnosis, he felt more at ease and selected no treatment. This syndrome can develop after a wide variety of insults, such as trauma, surgery or inflammation to the auriculotemporal nerve fibers. It is considered to be the result of misdirected regeneration of parasympathetic fibers onto sympathetic receptors supplying sweat glands instead of salivary glands (1).

Auriculotemporal nerve syndrome in association with congenital haemangiopericytoma: a case report.
BACKGROUND Auriculotemporal nerve syndrome is characterised by recurrent episodes of facial gustatory flushing and/or sweating along the cutaneous distribution of the auriculotemporal nerve. The condition is rare in children and is normally a sequel of perinatal birth trauma. We report a case of a sixteen-month-old boy referred by paediatric oncology with recurrent, unilateral facial flushing o...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Evaluation of images of perineural tumor spread in patients with head and neck malignancies is essential for planning treatment and determining the patient's prognosis. Although the communications between the facial and trigeminal nerves are not widely known, they may provide a route for tumor growth. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the course of the auriculote...

INTRODUCTION Auriculotemporal nerve syndrome is characterized by erythema, perspiration, heat and pain localized in the area supplied by the auriculotemporal nerve in response to gustatory stimuli after the ingestion of different types of food. This syndrome may be confused with food allergy. CASE REPORT A 21-year-old woman complained of erythema, sweat and heat in the right cheek after intak...
متن کاملCranial Nerve Mischief Masquerading as Food Allergy: Auriculotemporal (frey’s) Syndrome in a Child with Moebius Syndrome
INTRODUCTION T diagnosis of food allergy can be challenging and many conditions can mimic food allergy. It is imperative to differentiate true food allergy from the ‘mimics’ of food allergy, particularly in children eliminating multiple foods from their diet. This case report describes a child with features of Auriculotemporal (Frey’s) syndrome, posing as multiple food allergies. The child was ...
متن کاملFrey's syndrome after condylar fracture: case report.
Frey's syndrome is the occurrence of hyperesthesia, flushing and warmth or sweating over the distribution of the auriculotemporal nerve and/or greater auricular nerve while eating foods that produce a strong salivary stimulus. Frey's syndrome is also known as auriculotemporal syndrome and gustatory sweating. We present a case of Frey's syndrome after a condylar fracture and its treatment by int...
