چکیده

Both transitive reasoning and analogy-making are present at very early stage of human development and the question arises whether the two developmental trajectories interact with each other. We are presenting an experiment with 4 years old children to test the hypothesis that the analogymaking capabilities can scaffold and facilitate the development of transitive inference and the empirical data support this hypothesis.

Can Analogy Help Children Make Transitive Inference?

This paper is exploring whether analogy-making as an early developing ability could potentially help children to develop deductive reasoning ability and in particular, transitive inference. Two experiments are presented. In the first one transitive mapping is explored further to make sure children at the age of 4 can do the transitive mapping task even when all three objects are hidden and no p...

Does the Family Analogy Help Young Children To Do Relational Mapping?

The experiment described in this paper tests the hypothesis that since the family is very familiar relational structure to even young children, the relational mapping between sets of objects will be significantly enhanced if children are invited to make an analogy with the family. This research is based on Gentner and Rattermann’s, and Goswami’s work in the same direction and tries to further e...

Extending the Qualitative Trajectory Calculus Based on the Concept of Accessibility of Moving Objects in the Paths

Qualitative spatial representation and reasoning are among the important capabilities in intelligent geospatial information system development. Although a large contribution to the study of moving objects has been attributed to the quantitative use and analysis of data, such calculations are ineffective when there is little inaccurate data on position and geometry or when explicitly explaining ...

Monkey Errors in Transitive Inference

The ability to make transitive inference, (A > B) ∧ (B > C) ` A > C, occurs in many mammal species, given adequate training. Further, errors made by monkeys are quite similar to those made by 5-year-old children. This paper presents a model that learns transitive inference by acquiring and prioritizing sets of behavior rules linked to contexts. When correctly learned, the resulting system is id...

Primate Errors in Transitive Inference

This paper provides a new model of primate transitive inference learning. We begin from the production-rule model of Harris and McGonigle (1994), which was previously the best model at accounting for the performance of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) and human children trained on transitive inference (e.g. given A > B and B > C, then A > C) when presented with three items from the training ...
