چکیده

T HE role of rumen protozoa in ruminant metabolism has received increasing attention during the past few years. Increased rates of gain by lambs containing protozoa compared to protozoa-free lambs were reported by Abou Akkada and el-Shazly (1964) and Yoder et al. (1964), who demonstrated that certain rations are more readily digested by faunated than by defaunated lambs. Greater rumen ammonia concentrations and altered rumen volatile fatty acid proportions were reported by Christiansen et al. (1965), when faunated animals were compared with protozoa-free animals. These results have been confirmed by Abou Akkada and el-Shazly (1965), who also found increased nitrogen retention in faunated lambs when compared with defaunated animals. Greater concentrations of protozoa resulting from feeding antibiotic to lambs (Klopfenstein et al., 1964; Purser et al., 1965) suggest that protozoa may be involved in the favorable response to antibiotic exhibited by growing animals. Further Mochrie (1964) suggested that protozoa are responsible at least in part for the favorable response to frequent feeding of ruminants. The present study investigated further the influence of protozoa upon ruminant metabolism.

The effects of defaunation of the rumen on the growth of cattle on low-protein high-energy diets.

1. The effects of defaunation of the rumen of cattle on low-protein diets was studied using animals given free access to a basal diet of liquid molasses and 1500 g oaten straw/head per d. These diets induced moderate numbers of protozoa in the rumen. 2. Nonyl phenol ethoxylate (trade name teric GN9) was used for defaunation; 100 g teric GN9 was found to be sufficient to eliminate protozoa from ...

Effects of defaunation on digestion of fresh Digitaria decumbens grass and growth of lambs.

The effects of defaunation on growth and digestion were measured in sheep fed fresh Digitaria decumbens grass cut at four stages of regrowth 14, 28, 42, and 56 days, and with different protein to energy (P/E) ratios. Two completely randomized designs trials (growth and digestion) were conducted using faunated animals, defaunated rams and protozoa free lambs. The digestion trial: eight faunated ...

The effects of date presscakes supplemented with exogenous enzyme on the growth performance, gastrointestinal and nutrient digestibility of broiler chicks

ABSTRACT- This study was designed to investigate the effects of adding different levels of date presscakes (DP), with and without enzyme supplementation (ES), on the ileal digestibility and growth performance of broiler. A completely randomized design containing 2 × 5 factorial arrangement of treatments (with and without enzyme supplementation and 5 levels of DP) was used. The enzyme complex co...

Effects of Levels of Ficus (Ficus sycomorus) Supplementation on Voluntary Feed Intake, Nutrient Digestibility and Nitrogen Balance in Yankasa Bucks Fed Urea Treated Maize Stover Basal Diet

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding varying levels of Ficus sycomorus leaf forages as protein supplements to a basal diet of urea treated maize stover. Four Yankasa goats averaging one year and weighing 11.7±1.8 kg were used to measure the feed intake, digestibility and nitrogen balance. The basal diet (urea treated maize stover) was supplemented with 0 (T1), 50 (T2), 100...

Effects of Sodium Bentonite on Blood Parameters, Feed Digestibility and Rumen Fermentation Parameters of Male Balouchi Sheep Fed Diet Contaminated by Diazinon, an Organophosphate Pesticide

The remnants of pesticides in livestock feeds have been increased by excessive using of these pesticides so as to meet extreme demands for more feeds. Finding a new strategy for reducing pesticides negative effects is absolutely necessary. Therefore, evaluation of the effects of sodium bentonite on blood parameters, feed digestibility and rumen fermentation parameters in sheep fed diets contami...

Effects of Defaunation on Fermentation Characteristics and Methane Production by Rumen Microbes In vitro When Incubated with Starchy Feed Sources

An in vitro experiment was conducted to examine the effects of defaunation (removal of protozoa) on ruminal fermentation characteristics, CH4 production and degradation by rumen microbes when incubated with cereal grains (corn, wheat and rye). Sodium lauryl sulfate as a defaunation reagent was added into the culture solution at a concentration of 0.000375 g/ml, and incubated anaerobically for u...
