Quasi-periodic climate teleconnections between northern and southern Europe during the 17th–20th centuries

چکیده
The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the leading mode of atmospheric variability in the North Atlantic region, influencing storm tracks and creating a dipole pattern of precipitation from north to south across Western Europe. This distinct spatial distribution of precipitation provides a framework that can be potentially used to identify and reconstruct patterns of past NAOforced climate variability. In this study we use tree-ring width series from Western Europe, in conjunction with principal components analysis and advanced spectral methods, to prospect for quasi-periodic climate signals that are forced by the NAO. We identify a robust 25-yr anti-phased synchronization in climate variability between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean during the 17th–20th centuries. The amplitude of the 25-yr beat displays a long-term modulation in northern and southern Europe, with minimum amplitude during the late Maunder Minimum. This amplitude minimum coincides with a maximum in ΔC, suggesting a potential solar or oceanic influence on the intensity of the 25-yr band of quasi-periodic variability. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. An outline of the history of pellagra in Italy
During the 16th and 17th centuries maize, a New World cereal defi cient in niacin (vitamin B3 or PP), replaced cereals of higher economic and nutritional value in the staple diet of the poor in Southern Europe. As a consequence of quasi-monophagic maize porridge-based diets pellagra, a lethal new disease due to severe niacin defi ciency, spread dramatically among the Southern European peasantry...
متن کاملImpact of ENSO on European Climate
The El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) affects many parts of the globe, particularly in the tropics where changes in rainfall and temperature due to the varying phase of ENSO are the single largest source of year-toyear change. Clear ENSO influences on the extratropics are found over North America and Australia but Atlantic links are much less clear. In this short paper we review some of the...
متن کاملClimate change record in subsurface temperatures: A global perspective
Analyses of underground temperature measurements from 358 boreholes in eastern North America, central Europe, southern Africa, and Australia indicate that, in the 20th century, the average surface temperature of Earth has increased by about 0.5 degreesC and that the 20th century has been the warmest of the past five centuries. The subsurface temperatures also indicate that Earth's mean surface ...
متن کاملSeparating the stratospheric and tropospheric pathways of El Niño–Southern Oscillation teleconnections
The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major driver of Northern Hemisphere wintertime variability and, generally, the key ingredient used in seasonal forecasts of wintertime surface climate. Modeling studies have recently suggested that ENSO teleconnections might involve both a tropospheric pathway and a stratospheric one. Here, using reanalysis data, we carefully distinguish between the ...

[1] A global perspective is developed on a number of high impact climate extremes in 2010 through diagnostic studies of the anomalies, diabatic heating, and global energy and water cycles that demonstrate relationships among variables and across events. Natural variability, especially ENSO, and global warming from human influences together resulted in very high sea surface temperatures (SSTs) i...
