Metal Sorption on Mineral Surfaces: an Overview with Examples Relating to Mineral Deposits
نویسنده
چکیده
Sorption reactions, involving both inorganic and organic particulates, are an important control on the transport and fate of many trace elements in natural systems. Understanding the controls on trace-element concentrations in waters is critical for a number of applications including the transport of contaminants and nutrients, geochemical prospecting, agriculture, municipal and industrial water treatment, and bioavailability to name a few. This chapter provides an overview of metal sorption on mineral surfaces and gives examples of predictive modeling of metalsorption reactions in mine-drainage systems. The word “sorption” is a general term that describes removal of a solute from solution to a contiguous solid phase and is used when the specific removal mechanism is not known. “Sorbate” or “adsorbate” refers to the solute that sorbs on the solid phase. “Sorbent” or “adsorbent” is the solid phase or substrate onto which the sorbate sorbs. “Adsorption” refers to the two-dimensional accumulation of an adsorbate at a solid surface. In the case of “surface precipitation,” there is a three-dimensional accumulation of sorbate at the solid surface. The term “absorption” is used when there is diffusion of the sorbate into the solid phase. Absorption processes usually show a significant time dependency. Sposito (1986) and Jenne (1998) provide a more detailed description of these terms. In this chapter, the term adsorption is used when describing laboratory studies with simple, well-characterized systems, and when discussing models that have been developed to describe adsorption phenomena.

Mechanisms of Nickel Sorption on Pyrophyllite: Macroscopic and Microscopic Approaches
Retention of heavy metal ions on soil mineral surfaces is a crucial process for maintaining environmental quality. A thorough understanding of the sorption mechanisms of heavy metals on soil mineral surfaces is therefore of fundamental importance. This study examined Ni(Il) sorption mechanisms on pyrophyllite. The removal of Ni from solution was studied as a function of pH (pH = 5-8.5), initial...

Here, we explore the role that sorption to mineral surfaces plays in the fate of two commonly encountered effluent-derived pharmaceuticals, the anticonvulsants phenytoin and carbamazepine. Adsorption isotherms and pH-edge experiments are consistent with electrostatics governing anticonvulsant uptake on metal oxides typically found in soil and aquifer material (e.g., Si, Al, Fe, Mn, and Ti). App...
متن کاملSorption of selected radionuclides to clay in the presence of humic acid
Within the framework of the FUNMIG programme, Loughborough University is performing work to increase understanding of the sorption behaviour of selected radionuclides with various minerals in the absence and presence of competing complexing ligands, such as humic acid (HA). The determination of the distribution ratios (Rd) of binary (metaland humicsolid), and ternary (metal-solid-humic) systems...
متن کاملThe role of DOM sorption to mineral surfaces in the preservation of organic matter in soils
Sorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is considered to be a major process in the preservation of organic matter (OM) in marine sediments. Evidence for this hypothesis includes the close relationship between sediment surface area (SA) and organic carbon (OC) concentrations and the strongly reduced biological degradability after DOM has sorbed to mineral surfaces. The aim of this study was t...

In the environment, two main sources of heavy metals are natural backgrounds derived from parent rocks and anthropogenic contamination including mineral industrial wastes, tailing damps of sulfide mines, agrochemicals, and other outputs of industrial activities and factories. In this work, the physico-chemical aspects of the magnetic Nano- mineral surfaces are studied in contrast to acid mine d...
