چکیده

Four classes of turbulence models (algebraic, k − , k − ω and a differential Reynolds-stress model) are applied to boundary layers under adverse pressure gradient with a constant equilibrium parameter β = δ * τ w dp dx. Numerical solutions up to Re θ = 10 8 give the classical scalings in the inner and outer layer for all models. Comparison is made with experiments of Clauser at β ≈ 2 and 8 and with recent experiments by Skåre and Krogstad at β = 20. We have also performed new direct numerical simulations at β ≈ 0.25 and 0.65 up to Re θ = 700. The differential Reynolds-stress model shows the best agreement with the experiments and the DNS.

Direct numerical simulation of separating turbulent boundary layers

Direct numerical simulation of two turbulent boundary layer flows has been performed. The boundary layers are both subject to a strong adverse pressure gradient. In one case a separation bubble is created while in the other the boundary layer is everywhere attached. The data from the simulations are used to investigate scaling laws near the wall, a crucial concept in turbulence models. Theoreti...

Application of the Turbulent Potential Model to Complex Flows

The turbulent potential model is a RANS model that avoids modeling the Reynolds stress tensor. As a result it has the ability to obtain the physical accuracy of Reynolds stress transport equation models at a cost and complexity comparable to popular two equation models. The model’s ability to predict channel flow, free-shear layers, homogeneous shear flow, stagnation point flow, backward facing...

On Interaction of T S Waves and 3 D Localized Disturbance in a Divergent Flow Under Zero Pressure Gradient

To simulate the effect of free st ream turbulence on turbulent spot formation, experiments were conducted on the interaction of localized three-dimensional disturbances with the harmonic waves in a laminar boundary layer on a flat plate. Experiments conducted in three-dimensional diverging flow (but zero pressure gradient) show, while individually the disturbances decay downstream, their intera...

Turbulent Transport Characteristics in a Low-speed Boundary Layer Subjected to Adverse Pressure

Thermal anemometry measurements were performed to evaluate the heat and momentum transport characteristics of wall turbulence over a slightly heated, smooth flat plate with a stepchange in wall temperature. Single-wire, X-probe and triple-wire sensors were employed to measure mean and fluctuating velocity and temperature as well as Reynolds stress and heat flux productions. “Equilibrium” bounda...

Studies of turbulent boundary layer flow through direct numerical simulation

The objective has been to study turbulent boundary layers under adverse pressure gradients (APG) through direct numerical simulation (DNS). The numerical code is based on a pseudo-spectral technique which is suitable for the simple geometry (flat plate) considered here. A large effort has been put into the optimization of the numerical code on various super computers. Five large simulations hav...
