Automatically Generating and Validating Reading-Check Questions

چکیده
We describe a method used in the REAP tutor to automatically check whether students are reading practice texts for English vocabulary learning. The number of texts used by the REAP tutor and challenges of automatically generating reading comprehension questions necessitated a simpler type of question that could be computer-generated. We describe an algorithm for generating such reading-check questions for arbitrary texts. Two studies investigating the utility of these questions found reliable, moderate correlations with vocabulary learning and reading comprehension, respectively.

Generating Questions Automatically from Informational Text
Good readers ask themselves questions during reading. Our goal is to scaffold this self-questioning strategy automatically to help children in grades 1-3 understand informational text. In previous work, we showed that instruction for self-questioning can be generated for narrative text. This paper tests the generality of that approach by applying it to informational text. We describe the modifi...
متن کاملAutomatic Generation of English Vocabulary Tests
This paper presents a novel method for automatically generating English vocabulary tests using TOEFL vocabulary questions as a model. English vocabulary questions in TOEFL is a multiple-choice question consisting of four components: a target word, a reading passage, a correct answer and distractors. Given a target word, we generate a reading passage from Web texts retrieved from the Internet, a...
متن کاملAutomatic Question Generation for Vocabulary Assessment
In the REAP system, users are automatically provided with texts to read targeted to their individual reading levels. To find appropriate texts, the user’s vocabulary knowledge must be assessed. We describe an approach to automatically generating questions for vocabulary assessment. Traditionally, these assessments have been hand-written. Using data from WordNet, we generate 6 types of vocabular...
متن کاملIdentifying Where to Focus in Reading Comprehension for Neural Question Generation
A first step in the task of automatically generating questions for testing reading comprehension is to identify questionworthy sentences, i.e. sentences in a text passage that humans find it worthwhile to ask questions about. We propose a hierarchical neural sentence-level sequence tagging model for this task, which existing approaches to question generation have ignored. The approach is fully ...
متن کاملQuestion Generation for Language Learning: From ensuring texts are read to supporting learning
In Foreign Language Teaching and Learning (FLTL), questions are systematically used to assess the learner’s understanding of a text. Computational linguistic (CL) approaches have been developed to generate such questions automatically given a text (e.g., Heilman, 2011). In this paper, we want to broaden the perspective on the different functions questions can play in FLTL and discuss how automa...
