Guilt, anger, and pride about in-group environmental behaviour: Different emotions predict distinct intentions
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present research compared the in-group-focused emotions of pride, guilt, and anger as predictors of three environmental intentions. In two scenario studies we manipulated the in-group’s responsibility for environmental damage or protection. In-group responsibility for environmental damage increased participants’ guilt and anger, whereas in-group responsibility for environmental protection increased participants’ pride. The three emotions mediated the links between in-group responsibility for environmental behaviour and three behavioural intentions. In line with predictions, guilt predicted intentions to repair the damage and anger predicted intentions to punish wrongdoers. Pride predicted intentions for in-group favouring environmental protection. We discuss the role of group-based emotion in promoting different environmental behaviours. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The Norm Activation Model: An exploration of the functions of anticipated pride and guilt in pro-environmental behaviour
The Norm Activation Model (NAM; Schwartz, 1977) is a vested model that explains altruistic and environmentally friendly behaviour. Although research states that anticipated pride and guilt are associated with the NAM, these associations are not yet fully understood. The current study provides an overview of the literature that refers to anticipated pride and guilt within the NAM. Moreover, we a...
متن کاملThe influence of anticipated pride and guilt on pro-environmental decision making
The present research explores the relationship between anticipated emotions and pro-environmental decision making comparing two differently valenced emotions: anticipated pride and guilt. In an experimental design, we examined the causal effects of anticipated pride versus guilt on pro-environmental decision making and behavioral intentions by making anticipated emotions (i.e. pride and guilt) ...
متن کاملGanging up or sticking together? Group processes and children's responses to text-message bullying.
Drawing on social identity theory and intergroup emotion theory (IET), we examined group processes underlying bullying behaviour. Children were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a perpetrator's group, a target's group, or a third party group. They then read a gender-consistent scenario in which the norm of the perpetrator's group (to be kind or unkind towards others) was manipulated, an...
متن کاملEvidence for the regulatory function of intergroup emotion: Emotional consequences of implemented or impeded intergroup action tendencies
If intergroup emotions are functional, successfully implementing an emotion-linked behavioral tendency should discharge the emotion, whereas impeding the behavioral tendency should intensify the emotion. We investigated the emotional consequences of satisfying or thwarting emotionally induced intergroup behavioral intentions. Study 1 showed that if an attack on the ingroup produced anger, retal...
