The part between quotation marks is called the quote, the rest is the reporting clause. From (1) it is clear that quotes can be sentence-initial, discontinuous, or sentence-final. One of my conclusions will be that the quote-final construction (1c) is fundamentally different from the other two. Quotative constructions are not restricted to high-frequent reporting verbs such as zeggen ‘say’ and vragen ‘ask’. A large number of verbs (>500) are acceptable, depending on the context. Some examples are given in (2):
