* Currently a PhD student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. † Corresponding author. ABSTRACT This paper introduces a new methodology called ‘Design for Facility over Internet (DFF)’. This methodology provides an Internet-based environment for designers to perform manufacturability analysis of product designs with respect to the capabilities of existing manufacturing facilities, upfront into the design process. In the current work, only fixturing (machining datums) capabilities of a manufacturing facility are considered. A prototype DFF system for an automotive connecting rod, is developed. The system enables the designers to design the connecting rods by considering the fixturing (datums) capabilities of existing manufacturing facilities upfront at the concept design stage. The complete system implementation will also enable the manufacturers of connecting rods to create and update the database of their capabilities over the Internet. The DFF system analyzes the parametric design with respect to the fixturing capabilities and generates suggestions for a designer, to modify his design if required, to fit the capabilities of specified facilities.

Design for Fixturability (DFF) Methodology for Commodity Parts: A Case Study With Connecting Rod Designs
This paper presents a methodology called ‘Design for Fixturability’ (DFF). This methodology enables designers to perform manufacturability analysis of their product designs upfront into the design process. The DFF approach provides a mapping between parametric representation of a part design and fixturing capability of a facility and presents a methodology to evaluate the design with respect to...
متن کاملDesign Analysis and Optimization of Various Parameters of Connecting Rod using CAE Softwares
The automobile engine connecting rod is a high volume production, critical component. It connects reciprocating piston to rotating crankshaft, transmitting the thrust of the piston to the crankshaft. Every vehicle that uses an internal combustion engine requires at least one connecting rod depending upon the number of cylinders in the engine. As the purpose of the connecting rod is to transfer ...

Recent facility location allocation problems are engaged with social, environmental and many other aspects, besides cost objectives.Obtaining a sustainable solution for such problems requires development of new mathematical modeling and optimization algorithms. In this paper, an uncapacitated dynamic facility location-network design problem with random budget constraints is considered. Social i...
متن کاملStudy and Simulation of Shot peening Effect on Fatigue Life of a Powder Forged Connecting rod
Shot peening applies a residual compressive stress field (RCSF) on the surface of parts. It also shifts “crack nucleation sites” to sub-surface locations. A nondestructive method of measuring the stresses, Sin2ψ was utilized here and the stress values introduced to Ansys software. For this purpose, uniform stress in all directions was applied on the con rod. Loading on the rod in Ansys had thre...
