Margherita, S. S. (University of California, Davis) and R. E. Hungate. Serological analysis of Butyrivibrio from the bovine rumen. J. Bacteriol. 86:855-860. 1963.-The cultural and fermentation characteristics of a number of strains of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens isolated from the bovine rumen of cattle from different areas were determined, and the strains were subjected to serological analysis by the techniques of agglutination, immunodiffusion, and indirect hemolysis. In general, the results of the three methods agreed fairly well, but some variation was shown according to the method of preparation of the antigen. Much serological heterogeneity was disclosed. The greatest degree of agglutinating cross-reactivity was observed with strains isolated simultaneously from two animals in the same herd of African zebu cattle and with a Pullman strain. These cross-reactions were confirmed by immunodiffusion and indirect hemolysis tests. Agglutinating cross-reactions at low titers were observed between additional strains. The African isolates were shown to possess unique, as well as shared, antigens.

Isolation of proteolytic rumen bacteria by use of selective medium containing leaf fraction 1 protein (ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase).

The principle proteolytic bacteria isolated from bovine rumen contents by virtue of the ability to obtain nitrogen from the proteolysis of leaf fraction 1 protein (ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase, EC 4.1.1.39) were identified as Streptococcus bovis and Butyrivibrio spp. Substitution of fresh fodder, rich in soluble protein, for a hay-concentrates diet resulted in enhanced ruminal proteolytic a...

Accumulation of trans C18:1 fatty acids in the rumen after dietary algal supplementation is associated with changes in the Butyrivibrio community.

Optimization of the fatty acid composition of ruminant milk and meat is desirable. Dietary supplementation of algae was previously shown to inhibit rumen biohydrogenation, resulting in an altered milk fatty acid profile. Bacteria involved in biohydrogenation belong to the Butyrivibrio group. This study was aimed at relating accumulation of biohydrogenation intermediates with shifts in Butyrivib...

Serological study of bovine herpesvirus type 1 and parainfluenza type 3 in cow farms of Qazvin province based on different ages and seasons

The main objective of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of Bovine herpes virus type 1 and parainfluenza type 3 in a non-vaccinated population cattle in the livestock region of Qazvin province. Totally 504 sera were randomly collected and tested from 8 industrial dairy farms in Qazvin province during March 2010-March 2011. The result of one way analysis of variance was used for the a...

The Role of Bacteriocins in Rumen Microbial Ecology

In recent years there has been an increased interest in bacteriocins, primarily among the lactic acid bacteria, as a result of their applications in food preservation. There has been very little research on the occurrence of bacteriocin production among anaerobic bacteria. Recently, we reported a high incidence of bacteriocin-like inhibitory activity in isolates of the rumen anaerobe Butyrivibr...

Serological study of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection in water buffalo (Bubalusbubalis) in Ahvaz in the southwestern region of Iran

A serological survey was carried out to determine the prevalence rate of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infections in water buffalo (Bubalusbubalis) in Ahvaz, which is the center of the Khouzestan province in Iran. For this purpose, blood samples were taken from 310 slaughtered buffaloes at the abattoir. Sera were tested via the serum neutralization test. Serum neutralization was performed ...
