Vasovagal syncope in medical students and their first-degree relatives.

چکیده
AIMS To determine the effect of family history on the likelihood of vasovagal syncope. METHODS AND RESULTS Sixty-two medical students and 228 first-degree relatives were studied. Vasovagal syncope was ascertained with the Calgary syncope symptom score. The effects of the sex of the subject and parental syncope history on the likelihood of offspring fainting were described using Kaplan-Meier estimates and analysed using proportional hazards regression. The prevalence of vasovagal syncope was 32% and the median age of first faint in those who fainted was 14 years. More females than males fainted [42 vs. 31%; P=0.02; hazard ratio (HR) 1.34 (95% CI 1.07-1.68)]. An individual with two fainting parents was more likely to faint than one with no fainting parents [P<0.0001; HR 3.4 (95% CI 1.7-7.03)]. In the proportional hazards model, offspring of either sex whose mother faints are more likely to faint than those whose mother does not faint [HR 2.86 (95% CI 1.54-5.31)]. Having a father who faints significantly increases the risk of syncope in sons [HR 4.12 (95%CI 1.39-12.31)], but not in daughters [HR 1.18 (95% CI 0.56-3.34)]. CONCLUSION Family history and sex of subject are important predictors of vasovagal syncope in offspring.

Vasovagal Syncope Treated as Epilepsy for 16 Years
The differentiation of vasovagal syncope and epileptic seizure is sometimes problematic, since vasovagal syncope may mimic epileptic seizures in many ways. The present report describes a patient who had been diagnosed and treated as having epilepsy with medically-refractory sei-zures for 16 years. Often, unlike epileptic seizures, tonic-clonic convulsions and postictal confusion are uncommon fe...
متن کاملPrediction of Vasovagal Syncope based on Body Vigilance and Alexithymia Variables
Introduction: Vasovagal syncope is the most common type of syncope and recurrent syncope attacks can have a profound effect on the patients' quality of life. The aim of this study was to predict vasovagal syncope based on the variables of body vigilance and alexithymia. Methods: The present study was a case-control study. The statistical population of the present study included the patients wi...

Introduction: Medical emergencies can frequently happen in dental settings and inability to cope with them can lead to tragic outcomes. The of aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of medical emergencies in dental settings in Babol, Iran and dentists’ self-perceived need for practical training in this field. Materials and Methods: A descriptive-ana-lytical study was performed ...
متن کاملAngiotensin converting enzyme insertion/deletion polymorphisms in vasovagal syncope.
UNLABELLED Recent studies suggest vasovagal syncope (VVS) has a significant heritable component (crude estimate sibling relative risk (lambda(s)): 1080) indicating that at least some forms of VVS may have a genetic cause. Here we present the first study examining a potential genetic abnormality in VVS. METHODS DNA was collected from consecutive patients attending our unit with head up tilt co...
متن کاملSchizotypal Traits among Patients with Schizophrenia, Their Non-Psychotic First-Degree Relatives, and Normal Controls
Evidence has suggested that risk for schizophrenia is likely to occur in non-psychotic first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia. On the other hand, schizotypal personality disorder is genetically related to schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to compare schizotypal traits (i.e., positive schizotypy, negative schizotypy, cognitive disorganization, and impulsive nonconformity) a...
