چکیده

examination revealed normal muscular tonus and normal deep tendon reflexes with clumsy gait. Metabolic screening tests, including tandem mass, urine organic acids, plasma, and urine amino acid profiles were also normal. The patient underwent MRI of the brain as a firstline investigation, and T2 images demonstrated an extensive involvement of the hemispheric, subcortical white matter with a cerebrospinal fluid intensity signal change suggestive of multilocular giant VRS. MR spectroscopy showed no significant signal peak. The karyotype analysis of the patient was 46 XY, and FISH for Angelman syndrome also revealed a normal result. In the 2-year follow-up, the patient showed no neuromotor deterioration and radiological progression. In conclusion, VRS must be differentiated from other cystic lesions of the brain. Phenotypic characteristics of our patient were not compatible with the previously defined syndromes.

Effect of neonatal periventricular haemorrhage on neurodevelopmental outcome.

All 56 infants born between 23 and 28 weeks' gestation admitted to this hospital in 1981 were examined for periventricular haemorrhage with cerebral ultrasonography. Haemorrhage was diagnosed in 34 (61%)-12 (22%) had germinal layer haemorrhage, 18 (32%) had intraventricular haemorrhage, and four (7%) had intracerebral haemorrhage. The two year outcome of survivors with and without periventricul...

Area of lateral ventricles measured on cranial ultrasonography in preterm infants: association with outcome.

The association between measurements of lateral ventricle area (determined by serial ultrasound scans) and outcome was studied in 70 preterm neonates of 33 weeks' gestation or less. The study group was subdivided into four groups according to cranial ultrasonographic findings at 2 weeks postnatal age: group A (n = 15) had isolated periventricular/intraventricular haemorrhage; group B (n = 20) h...

Periventricular leucomalacia and neurodevelopmental outcome in preterm infants.

During an 18 month period, 120 preterm infants of 34 weeks' gestation or less were prospectively examined for periventricular leucomalacia (PVL) by cerebral ultrasound. Neurological and developmental assessment was carried out at 18 months of age corrected for prematurity in 82 surviving neonates. The developmental outcome (Griffiths development quotient) was above 80 and similar in infants wit...

Periventricular/Intraventricular Hemorrhage and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes: A Meta-analysis.

CONTEXT Periventricular/intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH) is a common short-term morbidity in preterm infants, but its long-term neurodevelopmental impact, particularly with mild PIVH, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To systematically review and meta-analyze the neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infants ≤34 weeks' gestation with mild and severe PIVH, compared with no PIVH. DATA SOURCES Med...
