چکیده

(Simizu et al., 1973; Hashimoto et al., 1975). Infected culture fluids were harvested in 24 hr after infection for preparing a crude virus suspension. The virus suspension was purified according to the procedures described elsewhere (Hashimoto et al., 1975). Physical particles of viruses were counted by the loop-drop method of Watson, Russell and Wildy (1963). One-tenth milliliter of virus suspension was mixed with 0.1 ml of a polystyrene latex (109 nm in diameter, Dow Chemical, Indiana-

Susceptibility of white Carneau pigeons to respiratory infection by Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.

It has been found that certain arbovirvises may be transmitted among avian hosts by modes other than mosquito bite. Holden (1) demonstrated contact transmission of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus among penned pheasants. He postulated that infections resulted from ingestion of infected materials or by inhalation of infective droplets. Chamberlain and others (2) observed contact infection...

Molecular Determinants of Mouse Neurovirulence and Mosquito Infection for Western Equine Encephalitis Virus

Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is a naturally occurring recombinant virus derived from ancestral Sindbis and Eastern equine encephalitis viruses. We previously showed that infection by WEEV isolates McMillan (McM) and IMP-181 (IMP) results in high (∼90-100%) and low (0%) mortality, respectively, in outbred CD-1 mice when virus is delivered by either subcutaneous or aerosol routes. How...

Vaccines and Therapeutics to the Encephalitic Alphaviruses

This article is a review of vaccines and therapeutics in development to the encephalitic alphaviruses which includes eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV). The encephalitic alphaviruses are endemic within regions in North and South America. Hosts are normally exposed after being bitten by infectious mos...

Infection of pigeons by airborne Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.

The experiments described were designed to provide information on the infectivity of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus for birds by the respiratory route. Laboratory studies by Chamberlain (2) showed that wild birds, including pigeons, could be infected with VEE virus by mosquito bite or by subcutaneous (sc) injection of virus. Overt signs of disease were absent in avian hosts, but vir...

Effect of dose on house finch infection with western equine encephalomyelitis and St. Louis encephalitis viruses.

House finches, Carpodacus mexicanus, were experimentally infected with high and standard doses of western equine encephalomyelitis virus (WEEV) or St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) to determine whether high doses would produce an elevated viremia response and a high frequency of chronic infections. Finches inoculated with approximately100,000 plaque forming units (PFU) of WEEV or SLEV produce...
