of the children, respectively. The frequency of vitamin A deficiency in the Kabul series (11.2%) was much lower than in the Hyderabad series (32.6%). The authors attributed this to prolonged breastfeeding, which would have helped meet the children’s vitamin A requirements. Prevalence of vitamin B complex deficiency was also lower in the Kabul series (22.2%) as compared to the Hyderabad series (32%); a likely explanation for the higher incidence of skin lesions (55%) in the latter. In concordance with the Hyderabad series, the Kabul series found low mean serum protein (4.54 g/dL) and albumin (1.86 g/ dL) levels while serum globulin (2.68 g/ dL) levels were relatively high. Thus, the study highlighted the spectrum of clinical and biochemical profile in kwashiorkor and the associated regional variations, though the precise etiopathogenesis remained to be unravelled.

Serum Albumin Level in Sudanese Children with Edematous and Non-Edematous Malnutrition

Introduction Edema formation in malnourished children is multifactorial and not necessarily caused by hypoalbuminemia. In Sudan, studies that evaluate serum albumin level in malnourished children are scarce, if any. The aim of this study is to assess serum albumin concentrations in Sudanese children with edematous and non-edematous malnutrition. Material and Methods The study involved 23 males ...

Molecular Evidence for Differential Long-term Outcomes of Early Life Severe Acute Malnutrition

BACKGROUND Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in infants may present as one of two distinct syndromic forms: non-edematous (marasmus), with severe wasting and no nutritional edema; or edematous (kwashiorkor) with moderately severe wasting. These differences may be related to developmental changes prior to the exposure to SAM and phenotypic changes appear to persist into adulthood with differences ...

Inflammatory mediators in children with protein-energy malnutrition.

Edema is a typical sign in kwashiorkor, which is present in a subset of patients with protein-energy-malnutrition (PEM). The pathophysiology of this edema is not well established. One of the abnormalities found in kwashiorkor is reduced concentrations of antioxidants, suggesting a compromised capacity to neutralize free radicals, which are known to induce tissue damage. We have studied plasma c...

Comparison of changes in serum proteins during early treatment in kwashiorkor and marasmus.

Kwashiorkor and marasmus are the two commonest forms of infant malnutrition found in tropical countries and the fundamental aetiological difference between them appears to be in the proportion of carbohydrate in the diet. The diet leading to marasmus seems to be reasonably balanced though insufficient in quantity and therefore in calories as well as protein, whereas the diet leading to kwashior...

Serum levels of immunoglobulins in marasmic infants.

The syndrome of protein-calorie malnutrition is associated with an increased frequency of infections which often precipitate or aggravate the state of malnutrition. The importance and the farreaching implications of the interaction between malnutrition and infections, a predominantly synergistic one, have been stressed by Scrimshaw, Taylor, and Gordon (1959) and more recently by the Joint FAO/W...
