چکیده

The current-voltage characteristic (IVC) of a system of two small series-connected tunnel junctions is calculated under conditions when the energy spectrum of the central electrode of the system is discrete. The form of the IVC depends substantially on the rate of energy relaxation on this electrode. I t is shown that at typical real values of the system parameters the global IVC singularities due to correlated single-electron tunneling should be preserved down to very small dimensions of the central electrode. At the same time, the system IVC should have a fine structure that reflects directly the structure of the energy spectrum of the central electrode.

Correlated Single-Electron Tunneling via Mesoscopic Metal Particles: Effects of the Energy Quantization

The existing theory of correlated single-electron tunneling in the double normalmetal tunnel junction is extended to the case of an ultrasmall central electrode of the structure. It is shown that the form of the I-V curve of such a system depends on the energy relaxation rate in this electrode. For realistic values of the relaxation rate, the large-scale shape of the dc I-V curve, which is asso...

Spectroscopy of discrete energy levels in ultrasmall metallic grains

We review recent experimental and theoretical work on ultrasmall metallic grains, i.e. grains sufficiently small that the conduction electron energy spectrum becomes discrete. The discrete excitation spectrum of an individual grain can be measured by the technique of single-electron tunneling spectroscopy: the spectrum is extracted from the current-voltage characteristics of a single-electron t...

Modeling and Simulation of a Molecular Single-Electron Transistor

In this paper, to understand the concept of coupling, molecule density of states that coupled to the metal electrodes will be explained then, based on this concept, a weak and strong coupling for the molecules attached to the metal electrodes will be described. Capacitance model is used to explore the connection of addition energy with the Electron affinity and the ionization energy of the mole...

Spin effects in ferromagnetic single-electron transistors

Electron tunneling in ferromagnetic single-electron transistors is considered theoretically in the sequential tunneling regime. A new formalism is developed, which operates in a two-dimensional space of states, instead of one-dimensional space used in the spinless case. It is shown that spin fluctuations can be significantly larger than the charge fluctuations. The influence of discrete energy ...

Tunneling via Individual Electronic States in Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles

We measure electron tunneling via discrete energy levels in ferromagnetic cobalt particles that are less than 4 nm in diameter, using nonmagnetic electrodes. Because of magnetic anisotropy, the energy of each tunneling resonance shifts as an applied magnetic field rotates the particle’s magnetic moment. We see both spin-increasing and decreasing tunneling transitions, but do not observe the spi...
