Tuning Active Monitoring in Multi-service IP Networks

چکیده
This paper explores the use of edge-to-edge active monitoring to control simultaneously multiple QoS parameters in multi-service IP networks, while reducing the effects of intrusion on real traffic. Considering a multi-class domain where traffic is controlled at network boundaries based on feedback from on-line measurements, the present work is centered on obtaining adequate per class in-band probing streams so that each class behaviour is correctly captured, even if more than a QoS metric is under control. In this way, we investigate distinct properties of probing patterns and cross-check probing and passive measurement results in order to assess and tune probing effectiveness. To enhance probing ability to sense multiple metrics, we explore Active Queue Management effects on probes and their different probability of reaching the network boundary. The results show that, while IPTD can be easily captured using a very low probing rate, matching ipdv and IPLR is not straightforward. However, we found that choosing a convenient drop precedence for probing packets, the simultaneous estimation of these QoS metrics can be significantly improved.

Deployable Application Layer Solution for Seamless Mobility Across Heterogeneous Networks
The steady increase in user demand for “all the time, everywhere access” asks for effective and portable solutions for mobility management. Traditionally, global mobility has been addressed by solutions at the network layer. This is the case of Mobile IP and related approaches. On the other hand, this class of solutions presents several drawbacks, such as high overhead, poor scalability, ineffi...
متن کاملAccurate and efficient measurements of IP level performance to drive interface selection in heterogeneous wireless networks
Optimal interface selection is a key mobility management issue in heterogeneous wireless networks. Measuring the physical or link level performance on a given wireless access networks does not provide a reliable indication of the actually perceived level of service. It is therefore needed to take measurements at IP level, on the (bidirectional) paths from the Mobile Host to the node that is han...

Network monitoring applications are often used by service providers to monitor compliance with service level agreements (SLAs) made with customers and to trigger troubleshooting activities when service drops below guaranteed levels. These applications can also play a role in determining the amount of compensation service providers must give when service guarantees are not met. Many performance ...
متن کاملA Scalable Real-time Monitoring System for Supporting Traffic Engineering
Quality of service based value-added services in IP networks necessitate the use of traffic engineering. The latter relies typically on monitoring data for both offline, proactive and dynamic, reactive solutions. A monitoring system should be scalable in terms of network size, speed and number of customers subscribed to value-added services. This article investigates the requirements of scalabl...

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of rules or techniques that help the network administrators use the available network resources optimally to manage the effects of congestion and to treat the applications according to their needs. The differentiated services architecture (DiffServ) allows providing quality of service to users. The major DiffServ premise is that individual flows with sim...
