چکیده

We propose a formalism for estimating the skewness and angular power spectrum of a general Cosmic Microwave Background data set. We use the Edgeworth Expansion to define a non-Gaussian likelihood function that takes into account the anisotropic nature of the noise and the incompleteness of the sky coverage. The formalism is then applied to estimate the skewness of the publicly available 4 year Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) Differential Microwave Radiometer data. We find that the data is consistent with a Gaussian skewness, and with isotropy. Inclusion of non Gaussian degrees of freedom has essentially no effect on estimates of the power spectrum, if each C` is regarded as a separate parameter or if the angular power spectrum is parametrized in terms of an amplitude (Q) and spectral index (n). Fixing the value of the angular power spectrum at its maxiumum likelihood estimate, the best fit skewness is S = 6.5 ± 6.0 × 104(μK)3; marginalizing over Q the estimate of the skewness is S = 6.5 ± 8.4× 104(μK)3 and marginalizing over n one has S = 6.5± 8.5× 104(μK)3. Skewness of Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature Fluctuations Due to Non-linear Gravitational Instability

Skewness of temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) produced by initially Gaussian adiabatic perturbations with the flat (Harrison-Zeldovich) spectrum, which arises due to non-linear corrections to a gravitational potential at the matter-dominated stage, is calculated quantitatively. For the standard CDM model, the effect appears to be smaller than expected previously ...

Measuring the Three Point Correlation Function of the Cosmic Microwave Background

We present a new method to estimate three-point correlations in Cosmic Microwave Background maps. Our Fast Fourier Transform based implementation estimates three-point functions using all possible configurations (triangles) at a controlled resolution. The speed of the technique depends both on the resolution and the total number of pixels N . The resulting N logN scaling is substantially faster...

Skewness in the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy from Inflationary Gravity Wave Background

In the context of inflationary scenarios, the observed large angle anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature is believed to probe the primordial metric perturbations from inflation. Although the perturbations from inflation are expected to be gaussian random fields, there remains the possibility that nonlinear processes at later epochs induce “secondary” non-gaussian featu...

Large-scale Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect: Measuring Statistical Properties with Multifrequency Maps

We study the prospects for extracting detailed statistical properties of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect associated with large scale structure using upcoming multifrequency CMB experiments. The greatest obstacle to detecting the large-angle signal is the confusion noise provided by the primary anisotropies themselves, and to a lesser degree galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. We employ m...
