چکیده

The first-principle theory of electron dephasing by disorder-induced two state fluctuators is developed. There exist two mechanisms of dephasing. First, dephasing occurs due to direct transitions between the defect levels caused by inelastic electron-defect scattering. The second mechanism is due to violation of the time reversal symmetry caused by time-dependent fluctuations of the scattering potential. These fluctuations originate from an interaction between the dynamic defects and conduction electrons forming a thermal bath. The first contribution to the dephasing rate saturates as temperature decreases. The second contribution does not saturate, although its temperature dependence is rather weak, }T. The quantitative estimates based on the experimental data show that these mechanisms considered can explain the weak temperature dependence of the dephasing rate in some temperature interval. However, below some temperature dependent on the model of dynamic defects the dephasing rate tends rapidly to zero. The relation to earlier studies of the dephasing caused by the dynamical defects is discussed.

Spin and phase coherence measured by antilocalization in n-InSb thin films

The spin and phase coherence times of the itinerant electrons in n-InSb thin films were experimentally determined by analyzing the low-temperature magnetoresistance in antilocalization theory. The results indicate a very weak temperature dependence below 10 K for the spin coherence time. The dependence of the spin coherence time on carrier density demonstrates that the Elliott-Yafet mechanism i...

Enhanced electron dephasing in three-dimensional topological insulators

Study of the dephasing in electronic systems is not only important for probing the nature of their ground states, but also crucial to harnessing the quantum coherence for information processing. In contrast to well-studied conventional metals and semiconductors, it remains unclear which mechanism is mainly responsible for electron dephasing in three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs). Her...

Thickness-dependent transport channels in topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films grown by magnetron sputtering

We study the low-temperature transport properties of Bi2Se3 thin films grown by magnetron sputtering. A positive magnetoresistance resulting from the weak antilocalization (WAL) effect is observed at low temperatures. The observed WAL effect is two dimensional in nature. Applying the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka theory, we have obtained the dephasing length. It is found that the temperature dependence...

The quantum coherence of electrons can be probed by studying weak localization corrections to the conductivity. Interaction effects lead to dephasing, with electron-electron interactions being the important intrinsic mechanism. A controversy exists whether or not the dephasing rate, as measured in a weak localization experiment, vanishes at low temperatures. We review the non-perturbative analy...
