Bent spine syndrome.

چکیده
Eight elderly patients developed progressive paravertebral muscle weakness with bent spine on standing but normal supine posture. Computed tomography showed pronounced hypodensity of the paraspinal muscles. Serum creatine kinase was moderately increased, paraspinal EMG non-specific, and biopsy myopathic. The syndrome was familial in two patients and may be caused by a late onset paraspinal muscle dystrophy. In the absence of specific pathological changes, such cases could be classified as having "bent spine syndrome".

tory. She had good muscle prowess in her childhood, but was not very active in sport before the onset of her complaints. Her symptoms started approximately 15 years ago with a slowly progressive gait disturbance. It had become difficult to climb stairs and to stay upright. Later in the course, she also noted mild muscle weakness in her shoulder girdle. The physical neurological investigation re...
متن کاملDropped head syndrome and bent spine syndrome: two separate clinical entities or different manifestations of axial myopathy?
Four elderly women are reported on with myopathies manifesting with isolated or predominant involvement of the paraspinal musculature. In three, the neck extensors were affected foremost, leading to "dropped head syndrome". In one, weakness of the thoracic paraspinal muscles caused "bent spine syndrome". It is suggested that these clinically distinct syndromes are caused by a primary tardive my...

BACKGROUND Late-onset multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is an autosomal recessive inherited disease of metabolic dysfunction clinically characterized by fluctuating proximal muscle weakness, excise intolerance, and dramatic riboflavin responsiveness. Dropped head syndrome can occasionally be observed in some severe patients with late-onset MADD; however, bent spine syndrome as a...
متن کاملA Case of Polymyositis Presenting as Bent Spine Syndrome
Polymyositis (PM) is a subset of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. The muscles involved with PM are typically proximal and distal limb muscles, but paraspinal muscles are rarely affected. The primary PM clinical symptom is gradual proximal muscle weakness but unusually abnormal trunk posture. Bent spine syndrome (BSS), also referred to camptocormia, is defined as an abnormal flexion of the tr...
متن کاملA study of assessments of camptocormia
Introduction Camptocormia (or bent spine syndrome) is defined as abnormal posture, with marked flexion of the thoracolumbar spine, increasing during walking, and disappearing in the supine position. This definition is not so clear, and indeed, there are no consensus criteria for diagnosing camptocormia. Consequently, the prevalence of camptocormia is difficult to determine. More often, the diag...
