Conventional concretes fail to prevent the intrusion of moisture and aggressive ions adequately. The use supplementary cementing composite materials have been reported to increase the resistance of concrete to deterioration by aggressive chemicals such as chlorides. In this investigation various combinations of pulverised fuel ash and silica fume were incorporated as partial cement replacements for composite systems. To establish the resistance of these concrete types to chloride ion penetration ASTM C1202 chloride permeability test was used. Prediction models were developed, based on the experimentally obtained results, which enabled the establishment of isoresponse contours showing the interaction between the various parameters investigated.

Measurement and Modeling of the Ability of Crack Fillers to Prevent Chloride Ingress into Mortar.

A common repair procedures applied to damaged concrete is to fill cracks with an organic polymer. This operation is performed to increase the service life of the concrete by removing a preferential pathway for the ingress of water, chlorides, and other deleterious species. To effectively fulfill its mission of preventing chloride ingress, the polymer must not only fully fill the macro-crack, bu...

A novel durability design approach for new cementitious materials: Modelling chloride ingress in strain-hardening cement-based composites

To fully utilise the advantageous durability properties of new cementitious materials such as fibre-reinforced Strain-Hardening Cement-based Composites (SHCC), a performance-based durability design approach is required. For crack-free ordinary concrete first promising concepts exist, e.g. the DuraCrete model. However, the parameters of these models, which were quantified for ordinary concrete, ...

to chloride ingress is one of the most common environmental attacks that lead to the deterioration of concrete structures. Corrosion-related damage to bridge deck overlays, parking garages, marine structures, and manufacturing plants results in millions of dollars spent annually on repairs. This durability problem has received widespread attention in recent years because of its frequent occurre...

Durable Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete with Supplimentary Cementitious Materials

Durability of concrete structure in marine environments is a big issue for many decades due to chloride attack. Chloride penetrates the concrete structure and accelerates the corrosion process of reinforcement which decreases the life of those structures. Also shrinkage cracks in concrete play main role for chloride penetration through concrete surface.  Many researchers tried to find easy and ...

A comprehensive probabilistic model of chloride ingress in unsaturated concrete

Corrosion induced by chloride ions becomes a critical issue for many reinforced concrete structures. The chloride ingress into concrete has been usually simplified as a di↵usion problem where the chloride concentration throughout concrete is estimated analytically. However, this simplified approach has several limitations. For instance, it does not consider chloride ingress by convection which ...
