Velocity Modification of Power Spectrum from Absorbing Medium

چکیده
Quantitative description of the statistics of intensity fluctuations within spectral line data cubes introduced in our earlier work is extended to the absorbing media. A possibility of extracting 3D velocity and density statistics from both integrated line intensity as well as from the individual channel maps is analyzed. We find that absorption enables the velocity effects to be seen even if the spectral line is integrated over frequencies. This regime that is frequently employed in observations is characterized by a non-trivial relation between the spectral index of velocities and the spectral index of intensity fluctuations. For instance when density is dominated by fluctuations at large scales, i.e. when correlations scale as r −γ , γ < 0, the intensity fluctuations exhibit a universal spectrum of fluctuations ∼ K −3 over a range of scales. When small scale fluctuations of density contain most of the energy, i.e. when correlations scale as r −γ , γ > 0, the resulting spectrum of the integrated lines depends on the scaling of the underlying density and scales as K −3+γ. We show that if we take the spectral line slices that are sufficiently thin we recover our earlier results for thin slice data without absorption. As the result we extend the Velocity Channel Analysis (VCA) technique to optically thick lines enabling studies of turbulence in molecular clouds. In addition , the developed mathematical machinery enables a quantitative approach to solving other problems that involved statistical description of turbulence within emitting and absorbing gas.

What Is the Behavior of the Ism in the Smc?
We describe quantitatively the neutral hydrogen (HI) and dust content of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using the spatial power spectrum. The velocity modification of the HI density power spectrum is investigated and discussed.
متن کاملVelocity Modification of HI Power Spectrum
The distribution of atomic hydrogen in the galactic plane is usually mapped using the Doppler shift of 21 cm emission line and this causes the modification of the observed spectrum which is frequently referred to as velocity crowding effect. We calculate HI spectrum in the velocity space and derive the observed spectrum dependence on the statistics of velocity and density fields. We show that t...
متن کاملFrequency dependence of the photonic noise spectrum in an absorbing or amplifying diffusive medium
A theory is presented for the frequency dependence of the power spectrum of photon current fluctuations originating from a disordered medium. Both the cases of an absorbing medium (“grey body”) and of an amplifying medium (“random laser”) are considered in a waveguide geometry. The semiclassical approach (based on a Boltzmann-Langevin equation) is shown to be in complete agreement with a fully ...
متن کاملSuperluminal to subluminal transition in the pulse propagation in a resonantly absorbing medium.
We have examined the propagation of femtosecond laser pulses in an absorbing dye solution through a short to a long range of propagation distance. The transmitted pulses show strong spectral shift and a superluminal to subluminal transition in the propagation velocity keeping its initial shape almost intact. It is verified that the peak velocity is well described by a modified group velocity v(...

Having conducted a search for the λ∼1.3 cm (22GHz) water vapor line towards galaxies with nuclear activity, large nuclear column densities or high infrared luminosities, we present H2O spectra for NGC2273, UGC5101, and NGC3393 with isotropic luminosities of 7, 1500, and 400 L⊙. The H2O maser in UGC5101 is by far the most luminous yet found in an ultraluminous infrared galaxy. NGC3393 reveals th...
