CLAUDIO VIOTTI: ANALYTICAL AND NUMERICAL STUDIES ON STRATIFIED FLUID FLOWS. (Under the direction of Roberto Camassa and Richard M. McLaughlin.) The mathematical modeling of stratified fluid flows is the overall subject of this work, which spans a range of more specific topics: internal gravity waves, shear instability, anomalous diffusion of passive scalars, vortex rings dynamics in stratified environments. This dissertation is organized in three parts. Part I focuses on shear-induced instability in large amplitude internal waves. Previous studies have shown that an instability of the Kelvin–Helmholtz type can occur within internal wave-induced shear layers, leading to wave breaking and production of turbulence. It was also recognized that such wave breaking resembles the instability of parallel shear flows only superficially. This study aims to refine the understanding of shear-induced instability in this specific context, and to identify the mechanisms that eventually make the onset of shear instability for such flows a significantly more subtle mechanism than its parallel counterpart. Part II is concerned with anomalous diffusive regimes for passive scalars advected in shear flows. The problem is studied from the standpoint of spectral analysis, which provides a natural way to classify diffusive regimes ensuing from different asymptotic limits in the governing parameters. The analysis identifies separate classes of eigenmodes, whose features dominate the evolution at different time and space scales in initial value problems with multiscale initial conditions. Part III contains a numerical study of vortex ring dynamics in a stratified environment, which represents my contribution to a research project conducted at the UNC

Analytical and Numerical Studies of Natural Convection along Doubly Infinite Vertical Plates in Stratified Fluids
Results are presented from a series of analytical and numerical studies of buoyantly driven flows along heated vertical surfaces immersed in stably stratified fluids. Flows of the studied type are broadly represented in engineering and geophysical applications. First, the classical problem of one-dimensional natural convection flow along a heated wall is revisited for the case of a stably strat...
متن کاملAn analytical verification test for numerically simulated convective flow above a thermally heterogeneous surface
An analytical solution of the Boussinesq equations for the motion of a viscous stably stratified fluid driven by a surface thermal forcing with large horizontal gradients (step changes) is obtained. This analytical solution is one of the few available for wall-bounded buoyancy-driven flows. The solution can be used to verify that computer codes for Boussinesq fluid system simulations are free o...
متن کاملElectro-magneto-hydrodynamics Flows of Burgers' Fluids in Cylindrical Domains with Time Exponential Memory
This paper investigates the axial unsteady flow of a generalized Burgers’ fluid with fractional constitutive equation in a circular micro-tube, in presence of a time-dependent pressure gradient and an electric field parallel to flow direction and a magnetic field perpendicular on the flow direction. The mathematical model used in this work is based on a time-nonlocal constitutive equation for s...

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the accuracy and stability of the numerical solution of fluid flows in the context of single relaxation time Lattice Boltzmann method (SRT-LBM). The fluid flows are simulated using regularized, no-slip, Zou-He and bounce back boundary conditions for straight surfaces in a lid driven cavity and the two-dimensional flow ...
متن کاملLarge Eddy Simulation of Convective Entrainment in Linearly and Discretely Stratified Fluids
Regimes of convective entrainment in linearly and discretely stratified fluids are investigated by means of a high-resolution LES in conjunction with relevant data from atmospheric, laboratory, numerical, and analytical studies of penetrative convection. Relationships between parameters of entrainment in the discretely stratified fluid are shown to be rather different to their counterparts in t...
