Using Otoacoustic Emissions as a Biometric

چکیده
This paper presents research into using otoacoustic emissions (OAE) as a biometric. OAE are a group of sounds emitted by the cochlea of the ear. The main types are spontaneous OAE which are continuously emitted and the transient and distortion product types which are emitted after stimulation. In this paper the characteristics of OAE are examined to determine the most suitable emission for use as a physiological biometric. The uniqueness of transient OAE are characterised from a data set of 2009 random individuals by a closed rank test. Details of a low-cost portable prototype OAE acquisition system developed at Southampton University are

A comparison of verification in the temporal and cepstrum-transformed domains of Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions for biometric identification
An investigation of methods for the use of Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (TEOAE) as an identification biometric is described in this paper. Three methods to calculate the Euclidean distance between individuals are investigated: Interpretation of area-under-the-curve information from time-series TEOAE; Measurement in the temporal domain between a TEOAE and reference template; Measuremen...

PURPOSE To present a case study in order to alert clinicians to the possibility of occurrence of intermodulation distortion during otoacoustic emissions testing that arises from the cavity formed by the external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane rather than from the inner ear, compromising the reliability and validity of otoacoustic emissions testing. RESEARCH DESIGN Prospective case stud...
متن کاملTransient Evoked and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions in a Group of Neonates
Introduction The most commonly used method in neonatal hearing screening programs is transient evoked otoacoustic emissions in the first stage of the process. There are few studies comparing transient evoked otoacoustic emissions with distortion product, but some authors have investigated the issue. Objective To correlate the results of transient evoked and distortion product otoacoustic emissi...

OBJECTIVE To assess contralateral suppression of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome and normal hearing. METHODS Twenty-four female patients with fibromyalgia syndrome and 24 healthy female controls with normal hearing were assessed using pure tone audiometry and transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions. RESULTS All patients with fibromyalgia synd...
متن کاملEvoked otoacoustic emissions arise by two fundamentally different mechanisms: a taxonomy for mammalian OAEs.
Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) of all types are widely assumed to arise by a common mechanism: nonlinear electromechanical distortion within the cochlea. In this view, both stimulus-frequency (SFOAEs) and distortion-product emissions (DPOAEs) arise because nonlinearities in the mechanics act as "sources" of backward-traveling waves. This unified picture is tested by analyzing measurements of emis...
