چکیده

tics are described in this paper. We show that anisotropic diffusion can be seen as a robust estimation procedure that estimates a piecewise smooth image from a noisy input image. The “edge-~topping~’ function in the anisotropic diffusion equation is closely related to the error norm and influence function in the robust estimation framework. This connection leads to a new “edge-stopping’’ function based on Tukey ’s biweight robust estimator, that preserves sharper boundaries than previous formulations and improves the automatic stopping of the diffusion. The robust statistical interpretation also provides a means for detecting the boundaries (edges) between the piecewise smooth regions in the image. We extend the framework to vector-valued images and show applications to robust image sharpening.

A Novel Spot-Enhancement Anisotropic Diffusion Method for the Improvement of Segmentation in Two-dimensional Gel Electrophoresis Images, Based on the Watershed Transform Algorithm

Introduction Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DGE) is a powerful technique in proteomics for protein separation. In this technique, spot segmentation is an essential stage, which can be challenging due to problems such as overlapping spots, streaks, artifacts and noise. Watershed transform is one of the common methods for image segmentation. Nevertheless, in 2DGE image segmentation, the no...

A robust active contour initialization and gradient vector flow for ultrasound image segmentation

Speckle and low contrast make ultrasound image segmentation a difficult task. This paper presents an original robust active contour energy and the corresponding quasi-automatic initialization. Both are based on the coefficient of variation gradient vector fl ow. Our approach combines anisotropic diffusion with the gradient vector fl ow field. The gradient vector fl ow is calculated from a map o...

Visualization of Principal Curvature Directions by Anisotropic Diffusion

Anisotropic diffusion is known to be a powerful tool in image processing. It enables the smoothing of initially noisy images while still retaining, respectively sharpening edges and enhancing features. Here recent results in the context of vector field visualization are expanded to non Euclidean domains. The aim is to graphically represent vector field data on two dimensional surfaces in an int...

Edgeflow-driven Variational Image Segmentation: Theory and Performance Evaluation

We introduce robust variational segmentation techniques that are driven by an Edgeflow vector field. Variational image segmentation has been widely used during the past ten years. While there is a rich theory of these techniques in the literature, a detailed performance analysis on real natural images is needed to compare the various methods proposed. In this context, this paper makes the follo...

Anisotropic diffusion-based defect detection

In this paper, we propose an anisotropic diffusion scheme to detect defects in low-contrast surface images and, especially, aim at glass substrates used in TFT-LCDs (Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Displays). In a sensed image of glass substrate, the gray levels of defects and background are hardly distinguishable and result in a low-contrast image. Therefore, thresholding and edge detectio...
