Time Horizon and the Discount Rate

چکیده

We consider an economy à la Lucas (1978, Econometrica 46, 1429–1446) with a risk-averse representative agent. The exogenous growth rate of the economy follows a random walk. We characterize the set of utility functions for which it is efficient to discount more distant cash flows at a lower rate. The benchmark result is that, when the growth rate is almost surely nonnegative, the yield curve is decreasing if and only if relative risk aversion is decreasing with wealth. Relaxing the assumption on the absence of recession requires more restrictions on preferences, such as increasing relative prudence. A Multi-Periodic Multi-Product Inventory Control Problem with Discount: GA Optimization Algorithm

In this article, a finite horizon, multi product and multi period economic order quantity like seasonal items is considered where demand rate is deterministic and known but variable in each period. The order quantities of items come in batch sizes and the end of the period order quantity and, consequently, demand of customers are zero. In addition, storage space is constrained and the problem...

Discounting an uncertain future

The objective of this paper is to determine the socially optimal discount rate for public investment projects that entail costs and benefits in the very long run. We suppose that there is an exogenous process for the growth of consumption per capita, which is stochastic. We first evaluate the determinants of the discount rate for a specific horizon when the representative agent has a recursive ...

Discounting with fat-tailed economic growth

When the growth of aggregate consumption exhibits no serial correlation, the socially efficient discount rate is independent of the time horizon, because the wealth effect and the precautionary effect are proportional to the time horizon. In this paper, we consider alternative growth processes: an AR(1), a Brownian motion with unknown trend or volatility, a two-state regimeswitching model, and ...

How Much Confidence Do We Have in Estimates of Future Net Discount Rates?

A recent survey by Brookshire, et. al., (2006) suggests that forensic economists are mixed in their use of current versus historical data to estimate future net discount rates.1 Typically the choice is between a long-term average or simply the current prevailing rate.2 Cushing and Rosenbaum (2006) proposed an estimator that optimally uses the information in the past behavior of net discount rat...

Maximizing the expected net future value as an alternative strategy to gamma discounting

We examine the problem of selecting the discount rate for far distant cash-flows when there is much uncertainty about what will be the future investment opportunities in the economy. We show that it is efficient to take a discount rate that is increasing with the time horizon, and that this rate should tend to the largest possible rate as the horizon tends to infinity. These recommendations are...

Sign Effect, Speedup – Delay Asymmetry and Gender Effect In the Tehran Stock Exchange

The present study first investigates the asymmetry of speedup - delay (gain and loss) and Sign Effect in Tehran Stock Exchange, then examine the effect of gender on the discount rate and explain it with the loss aversion. The sample is 403 investors in Tehran Stock Exchange, and the nonparametric Tests are used to test the research hypotheses. The research results show that there is an asymmetr...
